Since its based on a 30-06 cartridge, will a 30-06 laser bore sight work to sight in a 35 whelen?

May not center correctly.

you should be able to get pretty danged close just by looking down the barrel and get the center of the barrel on your target and adjusting scope to that. Do this at 25yds.

I've done that in a pinch.

It will work, but it's a waste of time and money. You'll use it once, realize you could have gotten it closer just eyeballing, and then if you ever try to use it again the battery will be dead.

If you're implying that you want to use a laser boresighter as a substitute for sighting in the rifle then you're drastically overestimating what they do. Unless you're spending big bucks on one it will only get you on paper, if that. You can turn the brass housing on most of them and the laser point will trace out a circle the size of a plate at 25 yards.

Please don't hunt with a rifle that is only bore sighted.

My only experience with a bore sighted rifle was a 22 mag I bought a few years ago where the shop mounted the scope and bore sighted it and it was dead on at 100 yards the first time I shot it. Guess that's why I overestimate a bore sight.

Any ranges in NOLA area open during the week that allow rifles? I could go zero it at 25 yards on lunch or after work but all the ranges I know of that are close enough to make it during the week I think are pistol only

it should take no more than 5 shots to have it sighted in.

3 shots is possible.

bore sight
Shoot at 25yds to get on paper.
put the scope back target and adjust the scope to the impact spot.

Shoot again.

Take to 100 yds and verify.

9mm should work. 30-06 should as well. .35 Whelen is just a necked up 30-06. Either of those will get you close.

I want to say I had trouble finding an actual .35 bore brush, tips, etc. several years ago when I first got my Whelen. Should be easy to find these days. I remember .35 not being in most gun cleaning kits. I had to buy online individually. Shouldn’t be an issue these days though.

Good Luck. Happy hunting.
