Used to be duck paradise 80’s and 90’s.
There are decent deer to be found but it’s not easy to access or to get deer out of there. I had buddies who hunted it with success but they’ve all found leases north of here.

Deer or Ducks? Mosquitoes will eat you alive if you are not prepared for them while deer hunting. Sometimes you cannot even hear anything but them buzzing.

I hunted it pretty intensely in the early 10’s with some boys from Rayne.
Not sure how it still is but on the right days we stacked the green.
25 minute boat ride plus walking/wading a .25 to a half mile in the marsh and just hunkered down in the marsh grass.
It was a very a minimalistic style of hunting bc it would kill you to haul in/out your gear and ducks.
We used a sled to haul our gear.
3 of us had a hunt between Christmas and new years circa 2012 where we were walking out of the marsh at 725 with our 18 which included 12 green heads and 2 bull sprigs.
Super tough conditions but it was worth it bc hints like that were always a possibility.

Brings back memories. In a La Niña (I know now) winter when there was little precipitation and water in our fallow rice field pond, we decided to go there. There were clear blue skies with strong, cold north wind. I limited out with green heads pretty quickly. It couldn't have gone much better. That was a long time ago.

You will hear lots of shooting for sure.
From the Lacassine club and Coastal club!
If it’s above 50 degrees the mosquitoes will eat you alive
The stories of green heads were from a long time ago The word got out and the flatbills ran them out

I’ll also say when I used to hunt it in the early 10’s, it really wasn’t very crowded bc the refuge is very isolated and no mud motors are allowed.
You had to be very mad at them to go out there.
I think only once we were beat to a spot and never had anyone set up near us.
No shortage of spots out there.
As others said, the mosquitoes are insane if it’s warm or zero wind.

Green heads decided to set up for winter in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and South Dakota.
