Yesterday my GF and I rode over to her parents house 1/4 mile down the road from her place. Spied a 3 foot long rattler sunning itself in the road. This is not far from Thistlewaite WMA, which is well known for rattlers.
I guess the warmer temps fooled some of them into thinking it was springtime already.
We ran right over that sucker and then backed up over him to make sure.

You almost stepped on it?
One of my worst fears is stepping on a rattler out in the woods

i now have an even greater fear--freaky jungle snakes on handrails!
In Costa Rica last week, I was descending the stairs from my friend's house (it's up like 12 flights of stairs on a big jungly hill), in the rain, and I look down to see that my thigh and hand were inches from the head of a 4-foot-long crazy snake who'd slithered from a tree onto and around the rail.
He had a diamond pattern and a viper-like head, but I'm pretty sure that was just a defensive posture trying to look like a pit viper. I'm fairly certain he was a blunt-headed vine snake--weak-venom, rear-fanged. LINK
But they have Fer De Lances there everywhere which are mean and wicked. I had a nightmare about one last night. I was holding it by its head trying to avoid getting pricked. Got pricked. May have lost my hand had I not woken up screaming like a girl.
(blunt-headed vine snake)
v.
(my nightmare snake--juvenile fer de lance--ferK that--ugh)
Pardon hijack, carry on.

Did it attack you?
If so, couldn't have been a Canebrake. They're as docile as kittens.
