Im looking for suggestions on a family kayak trip over a weekend where I can hit fresh and salt. Im fairly familiar with salt areas and I usually fish LA1. However I suck at freshwater down here. Im being challenged by my BIL who has never even been to Louisiana but is a great bass fisherman. He wants the Louisiana scenery experience so the swampier the better, the marshier the better.

Im not opposed to renting a cabin but it needs to be decently family friendly as there will be a 1yr old staying back with a 7mo pregnant wife. Also will have 10yr old with us fishing.

Im also not opposed to just driving from Baton Rouge. For both trips, Id like less than 2.5hrs each way.

This will be mid-late October over extended weekend.

Suggestions?

I don't kayak, but I know Venice offers both types as does Hopedale/Reggio/Delacroix area. However not sure about Kayak accessibility at any of the above.

ETA: Search Louisiana sportsman archives IIRC they had an article listing various areas popular for kayaking.

Delacroix would likely be your best bet. Some great spots for bass and redfish.

I was going to combine the trips and hit Reggio/Dela but he wants to catch bass in cypress trees.

Attach a Christmas tree to his kayak and tell him it's a Bald cypress that got some implants.

what about Lake Cataouatche ?

< 1.5 hrs from BR and that where VanDam won the Classic in 2011. You can also fish the Gulf Canal near Lake Savador and catch redfish and bass. Best time to fish is on a calm day just after the cool front. Fish a top water lure that resembles a poogie or other bait fish

I would say stay at the Delacroix Lodge and catch bass and redfish in the same area.

Hopedale/Delacroix is a good spot for reds & trout in the fall. I don't know if the bass fishing is any good but I have paddled around the Blind River at St. James Boat Club and its pretty swampy. Another possible spot for fresh would be Lake Chicot. Good luck
