Jug Lining for Channels in Lakes/Reservoirs

I know this is an effective way to load up on catfish. There's a million topics on bait, hook, "jug" type.
When do you put them out and when do you bring them in, how do you find them all, is one ever a mile away, how often do you lose one?

I have thrown jugs and you can catch some decent numbers, but I only do it in the fall/winter. If I'm camping at the lake, in the fall, I might throw some out at night and check them in the morning.
It's too dang hot to throw out jugs unless you're watching them like a hawk. You really have to babysit them in the heat.
You can definitely lose some if they are drifting but I weight mine down with concrete molded into a solo cup with an eye bolt in there. They don't move that way.

Use a heavy weight and they won’t go too far with them.
Also I suggest considering a night time trip right now. The heat is brutal during the day and the fish became super active at night. You will fill the boat with monsters on an overnight trip. Recently did one in July and it was a blast.

I would set mine right at dusk. I had reflectors on them .

We lose some when the hyacinths shift with the tide and the others when gators eat our fish. But we typically find the ones in the vegetation when they get caught in the prop.

Used to spread ours all over the lake, catch frogs and then come back and check them. If you are only putting a few out, I have seen baws put glow sticks in the jug which seems to help.

Like 8 or more. Tree lines can also be deadly. I would put light sticks in them so u can find them. A big 40-50 pound cat can drag a jug for miles

About a pound would probably work. Anything can be used like another poster said he made little concrete cups or pour your own weights if you have access to some lead. Buying the sinkers would be too expensive. Friend of mine procured a bucket of rail spikes and they work great.
No need to use lights on the floats. But definitely wrap them in reflective tape. You can spot them from waay off with a decent spotlight.
Our last trip we filled the first ice chest pretty quickly and had to get another.

There's a 109 acre municipal lake nearby with dawn to dusk hours. I want to go out in the afternoon and throw out cut-up pool noodles baited with fresh cut bluegill and come back in the morning and find them all. Do I throw out 5, ten, 30, I don't know what the ratio would be on hookups, never done this before.
Lake Ozora aka Tribble Mill Park.

Regarding the weights, I once came across a pool noodle in a big lake and pulled it up to see what he had, and it had decent catfish on it, put it back in, wasn't going to steal another man's catch. But there was no weight at all. It was just a piece of a pool noodle, line, hook, catfish.

I throw out 16 or so. In my opinion, it's too hot to leave a fish potentially hooked up from the afternoon until the next morning.

You’ll have to come up with a number that works for you and experiment a little. I can only tell you what has worked for me. We usually catch some very big cats on noodles. Last trip we had 7 fish over 20 lbs and it is not uncommon to catch 30,40, and 50 pounders. We have found that the medium to bigger cats will pull an unweighted noodle a long ways. A really big cat will still move it but no nearly as far. Between the noodle pulling him up and the weight pulling down they will wear out pretty quick.

Yep. It does wear them out and with high water temps, I'd be willing to bet you'd lose fish if they were hooked up for 12+ hours.

I don’t leave my noodles out. We put them out. Run them every hour or so and then pick them up. We don’t lose any fish.

What's the turtle to catfish ratio yall usually get on cut bait like bluegill? I'm considering ivory soap just to deter the turtles.

Pool noodles without any ID are fair game. I’ve taken many cats from noodles floating in the lake with no record of ownership, otherwise the fish might die. Same goes for yo-yo’s we’re I’m at.

Ivory soap is not good for lakes, you need a current for soap to work good. Haven’t caught any turtles on our noodles but we don’t put them near the trees and use a bit bigger hooks.

I use cut bait. Chicken breast if I don't have good size gizzard shad or nice size perch.
