Looking to get into a lease for next year. Preferably one that has a limited number of members and is serious about shooting quality deer, no dog running and a point minimum. In LA if possible, anyone know of anything good?

how much are you willing to spend ?

I might have a spot in S Tx for next season. south of Freer, 1000 acres plus a house on another 100 acres. We're shooting mature deer only, best bucks in the 170's this season.

While I have been dying for years now to make a west Texas hunt, yall would probably be to expensive. How far is it from Lafayette? And possibly a 1000 but thats pushing it.

From my experience, which is pretty damn extensive as far as La goes, 1000 is the least you're going to spend for a good lease. You can spend a hell of a lot more then that and still get a turd. IMHO, your best bet is to find some guys to go in with you, find some acreage to lease and go it alone. It's a LOT of work and it's going to take 4-5 years before your shite's together, but it's def the best way to go.

You in Lafayette? Follow the rest of the coonasses ( ) and go north. When you get to pine trees and people that "talk funny" (like they're from Arkansas), start looking.

West Tx has small deer but plenty of them. South Tx has less deer, on low fence ranches, but with the rain this summer our mature bucks are 250# plus.

You're right, $1000 won't get it done but you should be able to find something in Central/North La for that.

I live in Lafayette, it's 7 hours to my place but it's me and 2 other guys so the herd is carefully managed and we have some monsters - $5k a gun. If any LSU fan is interested you can have first shot before I put it out to a guide/broker. We need to shoot 4-6 trophies and 10-15 mgt bucks per season.

Actually there is some pretty big deer that are produced around Ville Platte and that general area. The trick is finding a place were the motto isnt "if its brown its down"

man, it can range from $10/acre for a really big place (10,000 plus acres) to $30/acre depending on the living arrangements and deer quality for the smaller ranches (1000 or less acres)

I'm paying $16/acre plus $4000 a year for the house/100 acres. Post on here when you are ready and I will put you in touch with a friend the manages a bunch of ranches.

Tensas parish is the best deer hunting in LA, hands down.

It will be hard to find a place that only shoots quality bucks for 1000.

I got real lucky and joined a place 10min from my house that has a 6 point rule but you can shoot one your choice, which I like in a way because you can shoot culls. They do run dogs but it's on the north side of the club only no dog running where I hunt.

$750 a year, well over 7000 acres and around 80 members.

How often are you heading over?

I have family in Maurice.

Would be nice to talk to your friend to see if he has about 1000 acres in the 12-18 dollar an acre range.

Hunt a couple of plantations there as well as a lease. It's nice. Different. Best in the state? I'm not sold on that. I have seen A LOT more and bigger deer come out of those piney woods. 5-10 years ago I may have been inclined to agree with you, but not so much any more.

There was a lull in the action for a while but there have been several 180's killed in Tensas already this year. If not the best, it's close.

Along the MS river from Morganza north is also pretty good.

Tensas does produce some of the best deer in the state. It doesnt have to be the best in the sate I just want some place where I can grow some good quality deer. The problem with LA is every redneck and coonass is dropping everything that walks. Ideal would be finding something within 2 hours of Laff. Easy weekend hunts and days during the week when I dont have class

Several times a month right now. Lots of work cutting back brush and widening senderos after all that rain. The deer are harder to kill right now because of the thick brush after the rain but the animals are unbelievably fat/healthy.

March is the time to get serious, most leases expire in late March.

Maurice is small, probably know your family. Ask them if they know where the big house on hwy 92 is at, that's us. If you want to give your contact info on here, I will get with you and put you in touch with Al.

You're correct, and I know the deer you're talking about, they are beautiful deer. To say that Tensas isn't some of the best deer hunting in the state is rediculous, but I have seen much better deer come out of the piney woods over the past 5 years then I have seen come out of the River bottoms.

On a side note, I have a pic of a deer that reportedly came out of Grant parrish that will push for the state typical record. The pic came from someone that owns property where it was killed. Guess we will see. I'll upload pic in a min.
