found 1 in some of GrandDad's old stuff. It appears to have a .22mag cylinder, there appears to be a shoulder in the cylinder bores. I looked online, and can't find anything about these being available in .22 mag. The pistol is at my uncles, and he didn't have any .22 mag ammo over there. I'm going back over there tomorrow and see if the .22 mag ammo will fit.
My question is, if the .22 mag ammo will fit, is it OK to shoot it?

We don't want to blow it up, it was my GranDad's. It was hid in an old round fruitcake can, under some circular saw blades. Had 8 .22LR rounds in it. We cleaned it up and checked it out and shot it with some newer .22lr ammo, but it did seem a bit loose in the cylinder, that's why I started looking at it close, and noticed what looks like a shoulder.
I found out that these were made by High Standard(good news) but might be a cheaper built version of the Sentinel, which was available in .22mag, and do appear to be a beefier made pistol.

Hi Standard built some with interchangeable cylinders, *usually* the ones rated for a magnum cylinder were a steel frame while the .22 lr only was an aluminum frame, take you a magnet.

Yeah, it's an aluminum frame. Wondering, if the cylinder may have been changed out though.

If the 22 mag fits and you want to use a lighter load, buy a box of 22WRF (Winchester Rim Fire). I've seen 22WRF at Cabella's and also online; CCI is one of the few companies producing this size.
I recall reading the 22WRF is the cartridge upon which the 22Mag is based--but verify this yourself since it is your GrandDad's firearm.
The Model 88 sounds like a sweet family heirloom, enjoy.

The blue is in rough shape, it's just been in that can for over 30 years. My uncle said he use to shoot that pistol when he was a teenager and had forgotten about it. He always just shot .22 ammo in it though. He was grinning like a kid, when we shot it last night. We just shot it into the dirt out the back of his barn.
He said "I use to take that gun to shoot snakes with, at the creek" Made me think of John Prine and Mulenburgh County, I didn't say that to him though, he probably would have thought that was weird. He probably never heard of John Prine.

how tight was the .22lr ammo in the cylinder?
.22lr and .22wmr they are not the same diameter
Edit for clarification

Pretty damn loose, that's what got me lookin at it. I know Grandaddy didn't buy it new, he probably traded a case of beer and some smokes, for it at his store. So he just might not have ever figured it being a .22 mag.

Surprised that the caliber isn't stamped on the barrel - or on the cylinder.
