No idea, but what are you making? I've been on an aluminum fab kick lately and I am having to talk myself out of buying a welding machine with zero experience.

It's going to be a removable sub floor in my aluminum boat. Im not going to be welding in. Just using self tapping screws to the ribs. I have to be able to remove it for cleaning every now and then.

How big? Home Depot and Lowes has small sheets, like 24"x24", but it's pretty expensive for the size. I bought a couple of 4x8 sheets from a place on Choctaw but I can't remember the name of it.

Aluminum & Stainless in Laffy and NOLA is all I've got. They have some serious stock.

Okay I found a place in New Orleans that will deliver free. 44" wide x 15' long X 1/8'' Marine grade diamond tread. $240.00. I will just use them unless someone else knows of any place else i can call. This pace is called aluminum and steel of New Orleans.

Good deal, they have some wild stuff in there. I bought a 12'x5/8 SS rod that they cut into 3 pieces for Cajun anchors. 3 for 40$ ain't bad.

You may know this, but be careful with choosing screws. Aluminum is very picky about the metals it touches and you can have corrosion problems if you pick the wrong ones. Also be very careful screwing into ribs, this can weaken them and lead to cracks. Actually just got off the phone with a guy who found 3 cracked ribs under his sub floor. Tinboats.net is a great resource for modding aluminum boats.

We buy from Phoenix Metals on Choctaw but that may just be B to B. Spiral metals used to carry aluminum sheet as well. What alloy are you looking for? Mil finish or annealed? I would assume 5052?

Zinc or Galvanized screws I think would be good. Although, the best would be aluminum screws. Drilling the rivets every now and then would be a huge PITA I would think. Definitely do not use stainless steel fasteners. A well nut might also be a good choice since you would have the rubber between the two differing metals. Look up galvanic corrosion.

I'm just starting to get into this stuff but everything I've read says never use zinc or galvanized...

Aluminum is best but hard to find and weak, might be ok for just tacking in a floor that will be removed periodically. Stainless is what most folks seem to settle on and just keep a close eye on it or use a sealant.

I may not screw it directly to the runners. I am thinking about running some treated 2x2's along the runners and screwing them directly into the wood. I can make into two pieces and I think it would be heavy enough not to move. Then it wouldn't be that hard to just lift it out then put back after cleaning.

Haha really not trying to be a dick, but treated is bad for aluminum too. It has copper in it which causes corrosion. Use regular old lumber. Seems backwards for something that's gonna get wet but it's true.

Yes I could use regular lumber. It wouldn't be that hard to change out every year or so.

Not sure if you've already decided on your place in NOLA but we use Custom Metal Works in Central for our panels at work.

You could epoxy the lumber. Would buy you more time.
