I plan to take them (11 and 13) to Sherburne this year but I was hoping there was something closer. I've heard Honey Island Swamp has some spots but I hear you have to give the squatch 20% of your catch.

What about along the sides of 51 near Manchac, I seem to remember seeing people crawfishing out there before? Thanks.

Maybe crabs, but I never seen anyone catching crawfish there.

If i had a dollar everytime an old man says they caught as many crawfish as needed in the ditches along hwy 51 when they were young, i could buy about 10 double cheeseburgers.

But not too many places i know of unless you got swamp in your back yard

Someone was talking about catching them in Manchac last year. Might have been the food board. Let me see if I can find the thread...

Hwy 51 sucks unless you leave traps to soak back in the swamp.

Sherburne is your best bet. Only place to catch a lot of quality crawfish. I will be there next weekend and I guarantee I pull 50lbs out in 4-5 hours.

Just using melt in the pyramid nets like these?

This sounds like a lot.

ETA: What makes Sherburne that much better than anywhere else? Do they stock the ponds?

You really need to wait until it warms up a little to have good success in the swamp. There are numerous place to go around manchac although you probably won't slaughter them you might catch 20 or solbs to supplement the ones you will buy for your boil. remember that the kids won't care how many they catch they will just enjoy the experience.

Go along the lower portion of 55 out of Laplace. There is an even older, third road to the right that is closed. the kids can play and you don't have to worry about them being run over. Just watch out for cotton mouths as there are a ton in that area.

Look up Sherburne South Farm. Your welcome, have a great time.

Pyramid nets•beef melt=crawfish

Read up on crawfish a little bit to find out where they concentrate. As soon as you set your nets run them.

Also look around and see what other ppl are doing. Oh, if you don't get in that water your not going to catch as many.

How many of those nets do you recommend?

I think they sell them by the dozen, or at least they used to last time I bought them. I would buy a couple dozen just in case they're really running and/or you tear some up. Keep in mind you will need something to attach the beef melt to the net. Some people use string or wire. We always took some heavy gauge wire and made clips to hold ours on. Oh and find a long sturdy stick to lift them with. The farther away you can pick them from, the more you will catch. Good luck.

You can only have 30 at Sherburne. So I recommend 30.

In some places the water is a little deep so i recommend buying few coat hangers. Straighten them out cut into thirds and attach them to the top of the pyramid net. Tie a red ribbon on the extended wire.

Walk in the water and pick up the traps with a four foot pole.
