Is there any big difference in TSS shells for turkey hunting?

My preferred vendor (Apex) has been old of shells forever, not sure what the issue but thinking about just buying some Federal heavy shot TSSs or something while I can.

I shot a Remington 870 turkey gun

TSS is awesome in a 20 gauge. Do that.

TSS is bad, and I mean in a good way. It’s so effective that I have a few buds that are hunting turkeys with 410’s with optics, and can kill them a long dang way. Just have to try it to see, but recommend…

Yeah last year I was completely convinced when I drop a nice bird at about 30 yards, so dead he didn’t move an inch. I had shot similar birds at much closer range with long beards shells and they died but not like that.

I have patterned them and there is no substitute

Yes.

I used 410 TSS and patterned like I was at 20 yards…at 40 yards.

Killed an old Tom with it too

Absolutely a difference.
Best thing you can do is try a few diff load and choke combinations to see what’s best for YOUR gun.

I shoot handloads but if I didn’t I would use apex.

What’s your current set up?

Look at a TSS pellet count chart.

Ability to put 294 pellets in a 10” circle at 40 yds with a 20g.

I made the switch a couple of years ago and won’t go back. I’m not looking for extended range, but it’s nice to know I can reach out if need be. I’m looking to kill them dead quicker at 40 yards and in. Like mentioned, they don’t flop and you don’t lose a bunch of feathers. I just want the most lethal pellets going in his direction when I shoot.

I have an 870 that shoots the kicks .665 real well with TSS. I have also had good luck with Indian creek and bought a new jebs for my sbe. They should all work fine.

It’s expensive, but it’s still the cheapest part of turkey hunting. TSS is absolutely worth it. I’m not advocating people shooting it to kill turkeys at 60 and 70 yards, but rather to have 500 pellets vs 140 pellets flying through the air at 30-40. The problem is people shooting super tight chokes trying to kill turkeys at 70 yards because TSS can. A lot of those end up crippled. Inside of 50 yds they should all be dead with tss and a less constructive choke.

The difference is gonna be in how it patterns in your gun and choke. I tried federal and apex, and have now settled on verdict 9s in 20ga with an Indian creek .555”.

The verdict gave me an even pattern, bout a basketball at 25’ and a beach ball at 40’, instead of being heavy in the middle, but every barrel/forcing cone/choke combo can be different. Helps to have a couple buddies shooting similar setups so y’all can pass things around until you find what works best.

another caveat that people dont think about is close proximity. When those TSS bb's leave the barrel you have to be dead on to hit something. They are tight as a rifle shot, causing lots of folks to miss 10 yard shots.

That's because people are shooting chokes trying to maximize distance rather than chokes that are right for killing at 20-30 yards, which is where most turkeys are killed.

At 10 yards it really doesn't matter though, as even lead #5s through a modified choke are tight as a softball.

All loads are different. If you want to be sure, I'd pattern a few different ones down range and see which is best.

TSS isn’t even fair.

50 yds is nothing with a 20 gauge.

A real turkey hunter tries to get him as close as he can before pulling the trigger TSS means an effective, clean kill at a much further distance. They are absolutely worth the $7-$10 per shell, you'll likely only shoot 2-5 shells a year unless you hit multiple states to hunt. They are really unbelievable how many pellets in a 10" circle you can put even with smaller gauge guns. Totally worth it to such a majestic game bird that doesn't deserve to be crippled and die slowly.

Apex is my preferred shell but they are out of everything again. I shot this gun. Model 870 SPS Super Magnum Turkey edition. 3 out of 4 last turkeys I shot were will within 50 feet, 2 with 20 feet. I don’t really take long shots, I just want the mfer dead when I shot. I get 2 to 3 chances a year.
