I was walking around downtown fort worth a few years ago and some sort of hawk had a pigeon in its talons. The pigeon was squirming and obviously knew what was to come but the hawk was oblivious to the fact it was hurting another animal. Nature is bizarre. Predator animals have no concept of the pain they are inflicting on their prey. Some animals can definitely tell they are inflicting pain and some seem to not, or they don't care. I find it fascinating.

Well, I let my Boykin out at lunch to go pee. He loves chasing the birds off the feeders. Seems like our friend got another one. He was on the ground eating a little sparrow and flew off to the top of my neighbors house with his meal...

Trapped squirrels in back yard, i would go to a wooded area to release them.
My Granddaughter was visiting i asked her if she wanted to go both me.
This time i went to a business area, she sat on the steps, i released the squirrel.
It ran across the street in a ditch, immediately a Coopers Hawk flew and settled above the squirrel,
Knowing what was going to happen immediately grabbed her and tan
I started to shoot the frickers

sounds like you have a target rich environment for hawks, owls and cats...

For eating squirrels? Yes, for the love of god, don't let the federally protected hawks destroy the struggling squirrel population.

I think the neighborhood Hawk could be cited for hunting over bait, he’s regularly swooping through. I had a Hawk chase one of the birds under the covered portion of my patio earlier this week. The Hawk actually hit the window. I was lucky enough to be standing there when it happened. Nature is fascinating. I’m installing a feeder with a WiFi camera on it to get a closer look. It’s amazing what comes to the current feeder when you switch the feed just a little bit. And the Mexican Tree ducks come in every day and clean up under it.

You'd be surprised. Cooper's vs squirrel is not easy to predict, and the outcomes might surprise you.

This is true. Cooper's occasionally take squirrels, but it's not that common. They are built for taking birds out of the air, and have the long, slender toes to do so. Killing a squirrel that weighs almost as much as they do is a tough task. I've seen more than one video of cooper's hawks intentionally drowning squirrels that were caught next to water. But, they have relatively weak, pencil-thin (or smaller) toes that struggle to kill a squirrel. The red tails on the other hand, are squirrel assassins and have the feet of an animal designed to squeeze the life out of 1.5 lb squirrel.

Yeah, I've seen coons in our yard at night on our cams, but our Boykin draws a hard line against cats.

Were in a bit of a dry spell now with regards to the weather and will let our regular feeders run dry until it snows again. My philosophy is if there's bare ground/grass the birds can find "natural" stuff to eat out there. It becomes much harder for them when it snows. We keep suet feeder full because we love to watch the woodpeckers come to visit.

We have a handful of Scrub Jays that visit our feeders too. They love peanuts. Our normal feed is about 1-2% feeders. They will scrape/dump all the feed out of our regular feeders just to get the small handful of peanuts in them. (Which is fine because it brings in the doves, quail and the towhee that's there 24/7.) So we put the Jays up a shelled peanut feeder. It was at this point that I discovered that Scrub Jay's will cache peanuts. They cleaned it out in 1 day. Filled it up again and they did it again. With 5 lbs of peanuts being $13, they're going to have to feed of their cache for a while.

Early one night I was in my shop with 20 foot garage door open. A mockingbird flew in and was going spastic flying up into the lights.
I got a broom and chased him out,he didn’t make it 20 feet and an owl snatched him in the air and flew off with him.
I could hear the mockingbird squealing further and further away as owl flew off with him.
