Get a $50 Kast King Spartacus II off Amazon. It is very similar to a Shimano Curado but at 6 oz weighs 1.5 ounces less and is 1/5 the cost. They are amazingly long casting, have a great drag system, and hold up well for saltwater.
Take the savings and get an Old 18 Buoyancy in medium. Currently on sale for $220. They weigh 3.2 ounces, have tremendous backbone, and have the finesse to throw an 1/8 oz jig head on 12 pound test.
I am a big believer in putting money into a rod over a reel. This gives you a great setup under $300 to throw anything from light lures up to topwaters, and its stout enough rod to handle the biggest slot reds. And at under 10 ounces, you can throw it all day with ease,

Can someone give some insight on what color plastics and jigheads are best for inshore in and around Pensacola? I've read "match the hatch" and "match the color of the water." I am kind of green at saltwater fishing, I moved to the coast about 2 1/2 years ago, but really started getting into it over the last year.
I have had the most luck with a rootbeer colored plastic paddletail with a chartreuse tail on a chartreuse jighead. I caught some nice slot specks, and a slot red with that over the course of a couple of days a few weeks ago, but the last couple of weeks I have been almost completely skunked. It seems like every step I take forward fishing inshore, I take 3 steps back. Frustrating.

For generally clear water like Pensacola use natural looking baits. Clear bluish/purple with some silver flake. Bone/tan with silver flake is good too. Chartreuse tail never hurts. Jighead size will depend on depth. I mostly use 1/4 or 3/8 oz and can cover most everything.

I don't fish the area a lot, but we have done well with Matrix shad with the clear or pinkish clear flake and a chartreuse tail. All chartreuse is good when water is dingy.
I don't think jig head color matters, but I do like the twist lock ones in chartreuse. I think an 1/8 ounce head is best as it stays in the water column longer. Deeper water a 1/4 ounce works fine.

Fine reel. Not saltwater friendly.
It’s an excellent bass reel for $99. I mean excellent.
My inshore baitcaster setup is a Curado on a Falcon Coastal MH. I have two Stadics on Falcon rods and a Penn Battle on a Waterloo rod I got on sale from Academy that I use for a trout rod. That Battle is an excellent reel for $150.

I thought the same when I bought one for real cheap, but going on 3rd year of using it wadefishing and everything else. Sucker is still like new. Pleasantly surprised.

Mine seized up on me after a season. Serviced and cleaned good as new. But my Curado is a tank and still kicking.
Again it’s a great reel at that price point.

I am looking for a new rod. Right now I’m considering a Waterloo hp lite or the Waterloo hp slam.
Looking for something to just throw 1/8 - 1/4 ounce jig head and soft plastic
Any suggestions

quote:Once I bought my first Curado, I could not use my two SLXs. The gearing is just that much better. I started watching for sales, both new and used, and have a nice lineup of a mixture of Curados and Tatulas. Never been more happy with my gear.
