why no casting reel?
There are plenty reasons, but the main question is, why do people constantly act like casting reels are more manly? I own both, and there's applications for both. But I absolutely HATE when one of my friends goes fishing with me, puts a damn popping cork on his casting rig, and stays backlashed all day long.
The guy said he's looking for a spinning outfit. That's why no casting reel. Damn.

Yeah, you'll have to find it on sale to get it for less than that. The one I found at Academy after Christmas was a 2500, but it's fine. I mainly fish for reds, and have 2 4000s and 2 2500s in Symetre, and never use the 4000s.

Don't go that big. Get the 2500 with 20lb power pro super smooth or slick, can't remember name, and you will be set. Its perfect size with plenty of power.

Good info. Also the kind of advice I'm looking for.

I agree with not going any bigger than the 2500

I agree too, but unfortunately I bought the 4000s prior to agreeing.

I was looking at the 3000 for the 10/120 rating thinking that I'd go up to 10# test. Am I missing something?

Great minds think alike. And it's super slick.

He's talking about 20 Power Pro, which has a diameter of 6 lb monofilament. In other words, you can put a metric shiteload of 20 Power Pro on that reel.

Made the same mistake when I started out as well. Caught some reds and thought I needed the biggest size reel I could get. Unfortunately didn't have people helping me on an outdoors board back then

The rig I told you about I have 15 combo's set up like this.
I catch well over a thousand trout every year with the exception of years that we have too much fresh water.
As far as line..I don't fish braid for trout or any line over 12 pound test because you get less bites.
I fish with guides and they taught me this..

I catch well over 1001 trout/year on the symetre with the mojo rod.

I'm full of shyt...I fish mainly for reds, but of course we catch a lot of trout as well.

There's a shiteload of decent rigs you can get for $150. But if you have to go to ebay to find it, I wouldn't get it. Shimanos last forever. Those Sedonas I have? Bought in 2003-2005, used PLENTY, still work fine. The Symetres were bought in 2005-2007, except for the new one I got after Christmas.

Why? I find them on google but I use eBay and paypal in case there's a problem, it's 100% refunded.

Because you KNOW you like them, I don't, so I'd want to put my hands on them before I decided I liked it. Not saying YOU shouldn't do that, just saying I wouldn't.

I tried lots of rods, reels and lines.

I spent way too much money but when I found this combo I liked it, I catch with it and I have confidence fishing it.

That's what it comes down to, confidence

Thanks all, especially Fishhead and Cadello. After all the advice got the Sedona 4000FD. Since I'll be fishing Bayou Bienenue along the bottom for reds and trout, I wanted to use mono instead of braded and the Sedona 4000FD seemed like the right reel for the money and the task. Felt nice and smooth. Now looking for a good rod, Falcon?, to pair it with!
