I walked out at the wrong moment and interrupted a turf war

Was doing a casual stroll through the back 40 earlier when i saw this. There were actually a couple other Osceolas I couldn't get in the pic, but I've never seen the species together. Turkeys were circling the rear, getting ready to move in, when the sandhills saw me. I snagged a few pics and reversed course, trying to let nature do its thing, but i ruined the moment.

Who you got in a 3v3?

Sandhill Crane every time. That break is lethal.

Man, that really is a cool story!

ETA: I’d have to go with the Sandhills as well….they have both the reach as well as the weaponry advantage!

I've never actually seen one attack another animal. I have seen sandhill carcasses after they've lost a fight to cat, yote, or dog. I've also seen a sandhill run off a bald eagle, who was just chilling lakeside, munching on the fish it caught moments earlier. Lost a lot of respect for eagles that day

I absolutely love their intimidation dance. Jumping up, flopping the wings, occasionally throwing some grass in the air. It's almost as funny as their calls. I 100% reciprocate/mirror it when it's directed towards me.

My swamp pond hasn't turned to just muck bottom in about a decade. Been pretty bummed about it, but yesterday made me appreciate other animals in my yard may feel differently about the current conditions.

There's a field about 2 miles from me, maybe 4-800 acres of cleared pasture with a couple large ponds. shite looks like standing room only at times. Hope you got/get to see a bunch

My Dad’s best friend shot some Sandhills somewhere near Pecan Island this week. They ate good at his hunting camp between that and a pile of teal.

If he did I hope he buried the carcasses and didn’t leave any leftovers.

Only cranes we saw were in one field south of Lionel Derouen rd. Over 100 and less than 1,000, it hasn’t been clipped this year so I was difficult to see them.
Drove 10-15 section loop and down to Cameron prairie to pintail Dr. Zero birds off 14, 10 spoons, dz snows, 3 dz illegal alien birds. Weakest trip around the loop evah.
