Seriously man.
I'm not knocking farmers (they do work hard) but they receive some of the biggest handouts this country gives out. He sure ain't giving up $$$ out of the kindness of his heart to help conservation. If he could make more money farming the land, there would sure as hell be corn there and not trees.

well sure, he gets our tax dollars to not plant, which makes himself a nice place to hunt that taxpayers can't go on unless he leases it to us, or gives us a bid. Speaking of, wouldn't you like to shoot my 6 ducks too? My phone has not rung. ;-)

Do you really think CRP money rivals active farming?
Posted on 12/10/13 at 1:27 pm to tigerfoot
what percentage of CRP money goes to marginal land cleared in the '70s when soybeans were $14-15 a bushel, that probably wasn't worth much as farmland anyway?

Farmer and welfare mama are both getting paid for doing nothing.
. The farmer is doing something though? So I guess I don't understand, he is deferring profits to assist with national conservation initiatives.

If you look at it for the immediate future, yes. shite look at Lake St Joe in Newellton. Used to be spectacular fishing, for everyone. Now farming practices have silted it in, it is a mud pit, or the bayou behind my house. These changes were in my short lifetime .Some vision could have saved these and multiple other waterways. Now they are not usable for anyone. Maybe all these welfare moms everyone is worried about could've caught their supper.

With the current price of corn maybe not.
Back when the land was put in the crp I bet it did.
You think some farmer with 5000 acres that can make X amount of $ farming is going to put all or portions of his land in a conservation program and make significantly less? I understand it may be a little less with the guaranteed subsidy vs the uncertainty of crop production but it's not like he just cares about nature

Actually, it's 87.3%.
My made up figure carries more weight that yours b/c it contains a decimal, and is thus more precise.
Nobody cares about the welfare moms on here, least of all, me. Just pointing out the irony/similarities of free money from the gubmint, and why it should be OK in one instance and not in the other.

True, but a good bit of that marginal land got sold to the Feds and now forms NWRs where we all can hunt. Just was not valuable as cropland, which is why it had not been planted before that.
