Fwiw , i agree with the OP. I dont like the unharvested fields and pumps and water heaters keeping water from locking up in the north.

But if they didnt, louisiana might single handedly deplete the mallard duck population

What pisses me off the most is the federal programs on private land. I don't want to pay for some rich mother fricker to have DU come in and do all kind of habitat management on their land.

Its private investors in the midwest and north that pay farmers more to leave their crops standing than they would make harvesting them.

And WRP programs arent harboring ducks up north. Those programs are available everywhere

my grandpa has farmed his whole life and knows a lot of farmers in Missouri/Arkansas/etc. Said the first thing people ask when buying land, even to farm, is "are there ducks".

This is nothing groundbreaking. just thought i'd share. hunting is a rich man's game now.

I have talked to a guy that moved here from Iowa, and he has been in on some of these operations. He told me of small fields with funnel clouds of 10k greenheads

I don't disagree. Just bothers me to spend tax payer dollars on primarily recreational private property improvement. In my opinion its an abuse of the system.

Why will ducks land in a dry corn field in Iowa but not in Louisiana? Or at least I've never seen ducks in a dry field down here.

Have always wondered this

True, but if the birds don't know they are down here because they are staying up north on the WRP areas, outcome is the same. Same with feeding or planting. You can plant all you want, but if the ducks don't fly south what's the benefit.

As far as DU, I know firsthand of a couple projects they have done for private landowners. Landowner donates 500,000 to DU, which turns around and does a 1.5 million project. Landowner gets 1/2 mil tax write off, a credit for wetlands creation and a substantial improvement to their property.

Haven't read this whole thread but watching a show where there is 15K mallards hanging out in a flooded field off the Snake River in Idaho the day after New Years in 8 degree weather is a little annoying. Especially when the commentator jokes about the price to run the numerous ice eaters and circulation pumps to keep it all from freezing.

My family does many of these grant funded projects on our property in Pennsylvania. We harvest less than 10 deer a year off of it and the government gets a good land steward on a piece of property that backs up to a national forest. The rangers also have keys to our gates if they ever need to get to an almost inaccessible part of their forest through our property. While some people take advantage of the system, some people are doing the right thing and making good relationships with local Wardens and Forestry Dept. Officials that benefit both parties. While I do believe that some programs need to be monitored better, the system as whole does more good than bad.

It can be done for cheap, you just have to get up there and figure it out.
