Brother-in-law called me up a little while ago to see if I could go over with my OBDII Scan Tool cause his jeep was running badly and check engine light was on. Got there and plugged it in and it spit out 9 different codes including 4 bad ignition cylinders, random misfire and several others.
So I go to pull the engine cover off to inspect the coils and before I get it halfway off I start to see a nest... When I get it all off I see this...
Directly under the middle of that nest is a large harness plug with many exposed wires. Several of them were completely chewed away and the rest chewed and frayed...

So your BIL called you before he ever opened the hood?

Had the exact problem with a friends generator, wires ate the phuck by squirrels.
450$ later, it's all good.

The engine cover not just the hood.
Oh and that's fricking fricked.

Had he been running it regularly, or had it been sitting for a while?

This is honestly a nightmare of mine. My biggest fear is rats. They make me cringe. Snakes are fine. Spiders are fine. But let a rat run in front of me and I turn into a prepubescent girl.

He must have killed the snakes around his house.

I know someone that had that happen to there BMW. Over 11,000 later it still was never right. Insurance did not cover it.

Uses it every day except for last week. They were out of town on vacation. Went to go to work this morning and it started but was running rough and check engine light was flashing. He took his truck in instead and called me on his way home tonight and I met him there.

They have chickens, dogs and 4 young daughters. So he doesn't allow many pests to stay around.

Nearly half of the foam insulator that's glued to the bottom side of the cover had been chewed away and was used as the primary source for the nest. You can see the hits and pieces of it all over in the pics. They were 3-4" babies so they have been there longer than a week. Just took them some time to chew into some viral stuff. When I popped the cover off they didn't budge. BIL ran in the garage to grab a bucket and a glove and came back and grabbed them up, put them in the bucket then took them out to the street for some heavy footed justice. From my experience as a Toyota Parts Manager, he's in for a hefty chunk of change of he needs to replace the engine harness. Most dealers and shops hate splicing in new wires and pins into the plugs and it's not a good idea for longevity anyway...

looks like you need a snake

They eat wires in our rice trucks and combines every winter. Then we had a bunch of cats show up, no more problems

You need to call in the problem solver....

outside cat would have taken care of this problem before it started

That sucks!
When I used to keep my CJ7 in a barn, I had a rat snake that lived in and around the Jeep. I never had any rodent problems.

I spent $600 on my four wheeler recently. Some corn had founds its way under my seat, and mice ate the gas lines and fricked up my carburetor. The mechanic found the dead bitch inside my bike.

I would go get a donor harness connector from Pull-a-part then solder and heat shrink the connections. Would have no issues if connecting them this way.
