I did a barrel “break-in” for my new X Bolt

Disclaimer: I am far from a professional shooter.
TL;DR: good rifle, pleasure to shoot. Break-in takes a long time but fun.
This is the first “break-in” I’ve done for a new rifle. Rifle is an X Bolt 30-06 with 22” sporter barrel. Leupold VXR 2-7x33 #4. Shot from Caldwell bags. Used Federal fusion 165 for first 20 shots then alternated with Federal Accubond 165 getting it sighted in. This process took a little over 3 hours. Having an ATV would’ve been handy to save some walking. Temps were around 40° with about 5mph of wind, felt like 10 mph gusts. And I have a head cold. But I digress...
Procedure goes like: fire 1 shot then clean after every shot for 10 shots. Here were the results not really trying to group, just getting rounds down range and getting a feel for the gun:
Next 10 shots, cleaning after every other shot:
Then, I admittedly rushed getting it sighted in and had a few fliers with a barrel that was heating up:
I tracked back and got two ABs to stack right where I wanted it, then shot a fusion to compare POI.
Gonna go with the 165 AB for now. I’ll go out again when I’m not rushed and try to get a tighter grouping. For now, minute of deer is what I need for what will be my last weekend to hunt this season.
As far as the rifle goes, the trigger may be a touch heavy. I’m not sure what it’s set on as I do not have a gauge. However, for a lightweight rig the recoil is very manageable. The new recoil pad seems to be a huge upgrade. I had on a lightweight 1/4 zip and was fine through 30 shots. In a hunting scenario, it’s a non issue for sure. As far as the break-in goes? Time will tell I guess. If nothing else, it’s a great excuse to get out and shoot and familiarize yourself with the gun. I definitely don’t think it hurts. Would do again (and will).

looks like ya put in the work
Personally i have never broke in a barrel on a hunting rifle. Sight em in and go. Bought a 6.5 creed in march last yr. Sighted it in with 7 shots. Took to mizzu this yr, dropped a deer. Came back home wanted to shoot to make sure still on after the ride, took 3 shots at 100yds, dead on. Killed buck the next week lol

And nothing wrong with that for sure. That’s what I had done as well til now. It was a good excuse to get some practice in though.

Same here never did a proper break-in on a rifle. Sighted in a go. Did the same with my 6.5, gun is a tack driver. Imagine if I would have did a break-in

How far were you shooting? Why are the groupings so far off on the green targets?

100 yards. Idk. Maybe I suck at shooting groups? Wind gusts? Barrel heating up? Glitch in the matrix?
ETA: I will say that throughout the groupings my first and second shots were the closest. The 3rd kept getting me.
Thanks, yeller

If nothing else, it seems it’s easier to clean the barrel of a rifle that’s been broken in. Season a skillet, season a rifle?

I did forget to mention that as I kept shooting, the fewer patches I had to use for a clean pass. So I think there’s something to that.

Take the bolt out. Put a ear plug in the end of the barrel.pour in Barnes c r 10. Wait about 10 minutes and pull plug over a bowl to save Barnes . Scrub barrel with brush then a patch. If you get blue repeat until clean no blue do that every 5 or 6 shots my 700 took about 40 rounds every rifle is different
Hope this helps you

I used Butch’s Bore Shine. Worked great

Dude that's a bolt action browning with a gold ring on top of it. Bore sight it, hunt, and squeeze that heavy trigger. Everything will die for the next lifetime. Quit thinking and carry it to the woods.

Good stuff! OTOH, when I've got more than one gun to clean I like to use a good foaming bore cleaner like "Wipe Out." I've done the "barrel break in" in the past, but now I just keep the barrel clean for the first 50 shots or so. In addition, I don't obsess about getting every bit of copper out of the barrel like I used to. I don't use the aggressive ammonia based bore cleaners now unless the bore is really badly fouled, like after a prairie dog hunt when I've put 200=400 rounds through the bore.

Unfortunately, yes. I'll never understand why though.

I break all new rifles in old school military style. 40 shots as fast as I can bolt them thru it to temper. Cool down to ambient and then a clean it. Sight it in 1 cold barrel shot every 30-45 minutes until it gets where you want it. Proper cool down and clean then Start the grouping process. Usually takes 2 days. Rare that I can get it all done in one day during the winter because of short days and cool down times.
