Its about the worse terrain you could imagine hunting in. Right now it is about as dry as it has been in years. A little rain will turn it into muck and get it back to normal. Most of the time you'll be walking balls-deep in water, with your foot sinking into the mud a few inches each step. Getting back there is hard as hell, but dragging a deer out is pure hell. You pretty much can't do it by yourself and good luck finding someone willing to help. The underwater cypress knees are a major pain in the arse as well. They'll trip you and your deer will get hung up on each one.
Damn, I can't wait to go now.

For realz. If yall are trying to deter me from ever hunting Maurepas, great fricking job. shite sounds miserable. I'd rather sit on my couch and watch monster Illinois buck hunts on outdoor channel.

Why would people do this?!

I live on the Diversion and have a very good elevated view at dusk. 5 years ago I might see 150 ducks after a front with a mix of big and wood ducks. Now I might see 30 wood ducks after a front and 10-12 on any given night. The ducks are gone from this area…

lowlifes brah, happens at night from what I hear
there is hardly any "high ground", it will kick your arse if u don't know how to walk through there and u will leave with a newfound respect for the place...personally I like the challenge

Why do you think the duck population has decreased so much over the years?

I think when they dredged some of the canals they put the dirt on the wrong side. It holds a lot more water now than it did. Not as much vegetation grows anymore. There also isn't any duck seed like there used to be. That and the the migration patterns shifted.
These are some of the reasons I've heard. People in the club I hunt at have killed hundreds of mallards back there in the 80s. No one even attempts to duck hunt anymore. I wish it still held ducks.

There is no water movement through the swamp to flush it out due to some of the things slick said...there's no open water, it's almost all completely grown over and the intrusion of salvinia has alot to do with it also. That swamp is slowly dying
ETA: That ^

The diversion canal cuts off the the river at the end, so the diversion has to drain into the lake before the water through blind river can drain out. Makes a lot of water back up in the swamps and sit stagnant.
If they would do the diversion project and flush some river water through those swamps it would really do a lot of good.

I don't even like talking about it bc it will never get done, it's been going on for over 10 years, too much politics
