Ive seen this topic brought up a good bit and came across this video this morning. The guys from THP teamed up with the guy from the Ranch Fairy channel to discuss hunting arrow setups.

This guy breaks it down in laymen's terms pretty much and pin points some topics I never thought about. Things like deflection, aiming points, arrow away etc.

Just thought I'd pass on. THP YouTube

Interested to see how you like their stuff. I’ll look at them and Day Six when I replace these Axis 300’s. But with the SS Black Eagle halfouts I have on them, they’ve been a challenge to damage.

What type of inserts are y’all using to get these > 500 grain arrows?

I've got the Black Eagle SS Half-outs which you can screw brass into on the backside. I think Gold Tip has a similar system. I have them in an Axis 300 which is a 10.8 GPI.

Here's a link to BE:

Ranch Fairy Troy is a good dude. I’ve talked to him a few times and text him as well. He’s got good information and is able to test on actual game.

My next arrow build for my VXR with be BE Spartins .250 with ethics 100grain insert and testing out head weight. Should end up around or over 650graibs at 29” arrow length.

.250

I'm having to be careful with my 300s that I don't get too much weight up front. My next set will absolutely be .250. Running 70+ at 29.5.

Brother do yourself a favor and dump those 300's. I assume you are shooting a modern bow, and they shoot good with stiffer arrows.

My last bows Triax, Halon 32, and Halon all needed a stif shaft or the 300 cut down so far that it made them look like cross bow bolts.

You will be chasing your tail with these 600+ set ups trying to use 300's.

What broadheads are you using?

I love heavy arrows. They make a world of difference for sound and vibration in your bow.

Got get em heavy so when you Texas heart shoot them hogs they expire, lol.

I had a bad hunt on a guided trip where an animal turned on me from a perfect broadside shot. I hit a shoulder and barely clipped a lung. Since then I have researched heavy arrow set up and benefits.

The way i see it traditional archers use heavy arrows why not use that same weight on modern compounds.

Unc dropping some knowledge.

I'm shooting a 300 spine that were coming in at 12.0gpi before the 75gr insert and the 125gr broad head, my draw is damn near 31". I know bhop and I have mentioned arrow weight over speed before in other threads.

I’m using a Hamske so I’m getting a 28” arrow to perform well at 586 grains. Running a 125 Ser Razor with 60 grains of brass. 55 grain SSinsert.

Mine average about 575-578gr total.

I used the 125gr slick tricks this year. Interested in a single bevel for next season though

I'm currently running gold tip 300s cut to 27.5 50 grain screw in weight and 125 point. Total with knock fletching insert etc is 485 grains. I tried some 150 grain heads but they are all over the place. I don't know if I really want to go over 500. I want a reasonable trajectory. I hunt in thick places that I have to shoot through holes. Also like to shoot at least to 50 yards for elk. I'm gonna see how the griz sticks shoot but I'd really like to be close to 500 with more foc..
