You stated ...
quote:

When I was trained to shoot an automatic many moons ago

quote:

As I stated above I did not say automatic I said auto pistol and I am, in fact, referring to auto loading pistols.

Auto loading pistol and automatic are two different things ... and no I am not new to shooting or am I trying to show off an understanding of terminology. What I am saying is that when you make the statement of an automatic ... people immediately think of a fully automatic weapon.

Perception is reality. Perception of the word automatic in regards to weapons does not go to autoloading pistols but to an M16 or the like.

What I am saying is be careful how you use this terminology that you are are implying that you are so fluent in. There may be someone new to shooting that hears automatic or God forbid someone who doesn't like guns hear you say automatic and think "Well see here are those damn gun lovers speaking out of both sides of their mouths. First they say automatic weapons are illegal now but this guy just said that 'When I was trained to shoot an automatic many moons ago we were taught to grab the slide and pull it back instead of using the release.' so see they are lying.

Do you see what I mean? If we perpetuate the problem then we aren't helping ourselves in the long run.

I searched, but couldn't find an owner's manual or parts diagram that called it a slide release or stop/release. All I saw was slide stop.

Apparently I can now remember the last time I used incorrect terminology. I know that slide release is commonly accepted terminology but I will be damned if I can find one manual that calls it that and believe me I have looked.

I use the slide release on my XDm and Browning BDM, but I pull the slide back on my 1911.

I've heard it called that my whole life. All I can guess is that it's from auto shotguns that use the bolt release.

Maybe gun manufacturers are avoiding that term to cover their asses for warranty work.

I am glad that you educated me on this because I am going to have some fun now with a few people.

I mostly use my slide stop as a slide stop.
I very rarely use it as a "slide release".
Normally, I use the overhand method to drop my slide.
(More hand to metal contact that way.)
If necessary, I pull it back with the thumb and index fingers of my support hand.
