I would love one just to plink with, but I can't justify dropping $300 on a rifle I won't hunt with (pistol is a different story). I guess I need a friend with one. I just wanna see a turtle explode from a few hundred yards.

They are unbelievably fun to shoot Coke bottles at 150 yards with.

Thats what I shoot is the HM2. Lot less damage than the HMR but is still a bad little round.

Looks like those guns are hard to find. Most discontinued? I see Savage and CZ and not much else. T/C used to make what looks like a decent Semi-auto. I guess I should look at pawn shops or used gun sites?

AlxTgr,
Production of new semi-auto 17M2's has been discontinued due to problems w/ chamber pressure. In fact, barrel kits to convert a 22LR to 17M2 also now have a disclaimer on them stating they're not to be used on semi-auto's. There's also a similar disclaimer on the 17 M2 boxes of ammo. You can search google for the details. If you find a 17M2 semiauto, be careful

Yeah, not many different 17M2 makers out there. I bought a Savage last year and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Of course, a 22 LR gun can can be converted to 17 M2 by changing out the barrel. The magazine for my Savage M2 is the same one used in the Savage bolt action 22LR. In fact, I think CZ makes a package gun that has both 22LR and 17M2 barrels so you can switch back and forth as needed.

007,
Thanks for the link for the 17 HMR FMJ. I don't think my friends have tried that load yet on squirrels. Next time I put in an order w/ Natchez, I'll probably buy a box or two for a gift to them. Are the FMJ's as accurate as the other 17 HMR loads? That's a really nice thing about the 17 HMR----for the most part the loads are match quality.

Bummer. I wondered why so many disappeared. Sure would love a Ruger semi with all the mods available. Or even to convert my old Marlin.
