17 HMR

Worst idea ever

Not everyone'll agree w/ me, but my experience w/ the 17 HMR is that it's much too destructive for squirrel hunting, whether it's head or body shots. Can't find FMJ 17 HMR loads around here to try them. OTOH, the 17 Mach 2 works really well.

Yup, that's why I want the Mach II.

North Alabama, or anything above Tuscaloosa/Montgomery will have the Orange Fox Squirrels. You get south of Montgomery and they are black with a white nose/face.

Uhhh no...that squirrel was killed in Morgan County, AL...in Danville which is near Decatur.

I'm from Hartselle and have shot my fair share of the orange tinted frickers on the refuge.

Should have clarified that in south Alabama they are all or mostly black. Your fox has that tint of orange on the body and legs...and is a big sumbitch too.

I used to like the 17 hmr, but now prefer the mach2. I haven't hunted them with a shotgun since I was a kid. I love sniping the little bastards.

A standar velocity .22lr solid bullet will tear them up too bad if you don't hit them in the head. Seems like a .17 at 2500fps would be a waste of the whole squirrel.

Looks like those guns are hard to find. Most discontinued? I see Savage and CZ and not much else. T/C used to make what looks like a decent Semi-auto. I guess I should look at pawn shops or used gun sites?

I use the Remington target .22lr's and it does the job, and doesn't tear them up when you miss the head. Use a Ruger 10/22 with target barrel and its pretty bad-arse. A good dog is the way to go. If you ever go with a good dog, it will ruin you.

I have a Kimber mach2 and a savage mach2. Taking both this weekend, not sure which one i will use. Both are tackdrivers. I have heard they were discontinued, but have never looked into it much since i already have 2 of them and have never had trouble finding ammo.

I'd have to sell most of what I own.

What's wrong with the savage? What do they want for it?

Only complaint on the savage is the protruding magazine that gigs you in your back while slung on your shoulder. Other than that, no compaints, very accurate. Mine is pre accu trigger.

Yea that's the only thing I saw that I didn't like about the savage .22's. Love my .270, accu trigger is the shite. My dad has a .270 in stainless with the accu trigger and accu stock with nikon glass and that thing is

And Alx yea I think I'd want a semi for squirrels. It seems the consensus is that .17 HMR FMJ is still too much for squirrels? I'm leaning toward my next rifle being a .17 HMR.

Yeah, I don't see a use for the HMR at all. May start searching for the Thompson semi-auto.

I wouldn't use it for squirrels. A .22 subsonic is the ideal shoot squirrels in the head weapon IMO.
