I have a Penn Spinfisher 6 and looking to buy the 7. It’s been a great reel for me and just looking to have another in the arsenal. I fish mainly specks and reds. Do I want the 3500 or the 2500?

Also, what kind of rod do you recommend I go with? All my rods have some missing eyes/broken eyes so I have considered just buying new ones

I love using 2500 series spinning reels. Prefer Daiwa and Shimano, but they are just lighter and more fun to handle all day chasing specks. Never had issues on the Reds i hook into either. Just run 15-20lb braid on mine.

Rods- Their are so many good ones now, I prefer 7' and 7'6 ML and M rods. Waterloo, Falcon Coastal XG, Daiwa. They are all lightyears ahead of anything we used to get 20 years ago. But the old All Stars still hold a spot in my heart!

2500, I've landed 30lb bull reds on a 2500, you don't need anything bigger.

I went with 2500 Spinfisher VII. Cabela’s didn’t have it even though online said it did in store, so ordered on Amazon and got a Rod/Reel combo. 7 ft pole medium fast

Great recommendation. Been using them since 2002. Fantastic rods and a great company

They got a bad bunch of blanks a couple of years ago on one of the Mojo lines (Mojo Inshore maybe?), and to their credit they left up all the bad reviews on their website. I think it was averaging 2 out of 5 stars, lots of reports of snaps on casting. They eventually got them cleared out and dropped the name for a new model.

I don't think they're the only good rod company but they're consistent (especially the US made stuff) so I know exactly what I'm getting when I order a 7' ML. I think I have 2 rods out of a dozen or so that aren't St Croix.

Depending on how nice the rods are, might be worth getting them repaired.

As to your question about spinning reel size, the larger spools can help with longer casting distance. If you don't have an issue with your casting distance, then go with the reel that balances the rod best.
