I know there will be some smart remarks but hopefully I can get some advice/questions answered in this thread. I grew up fishing lakes/ponds type freshwater in North Louisiana. I have since retired from the military bu live in NE Florida.

I would basically be fishing mostly intracoastal waterways and river inlets here and am looking at what is practical for me. I have stability(disability) issues due to a hip replacement and soon to be re-replacement. I will need to be able to launch/load by myself alot of times. I have a hard time with balance/maneuvering over and around bench seats etc...

Maybe nothing will work or be safe but I was curious as to a smaller pontoon boat. how would it work in these conditions with running up the intracoastal a ways or would I be limited to just within the vicinity of the launch. I'm not wanting to spend a ton to begin with and a used boat also but was just curious as to thoughts of what is good for stability and still be able to cruise a few to get to other spots in this environment. Pontoons, center consoles, skiffs, deck boats, etc..???

Any info is appreciated.
Thanks

Don’t waste your money. It’s all private water now.

what's "not a ton" of money? But your health sorta indicates you souldn't be fishing alone. Not being rude, just an honest opinion. More width = more stability getting in and out of. Fiberglass is more stable but river inlets could have rock, rock and fiber glass doesn't mix. Center console Xpress i suppose.

If you want stability, get at least a 5ft bottom. That doesn't have to be a pontoon, it can be a john boat.

ive seen someone in a wheelchair driving a boat, it was a shallow draft boat and had no gunnels so he could just roll onto it, also here there are some marinas that will help launch your boat for you

I know from looking locally it seems you wont touch what seems to be a decent CC in the 17'-20' range for less than $10k to $15K. I was wanting to start about half of that max. I am not one that needs the flashy look or top of the line. Well maintained and practical is good for me. I have fished the intracoastal in a 17' bass tracker of someone I knew and seemed to be ok in that. I would have felt a little more comfy I suppose in a larger deck.

I guess in those types of waters the stability vs the possible smaller engines and how that translates with wakes/currents/etc....

I would say a center console. We had one and my grandpaw loved fishing out of it because the seats were higher and he had grab rails to hold on to.

The pontoons definitely intrigue me especially the shorter length ones. The stability is definitely there. I just have concerns about power and such.

CC seems to be the consensus from any and everyone I speak to locally but they also don't take into consideration the limitations I have and also the boats alot of my neighbors own are far larger (more offshore) than I care to contend with.

I see this post and there are upvotes and down.....I guess with this being intracoastal waterways, rivers, and say the jetties and such I don;t understand how this applies. Pardon my ignorance and not trying to be rude I just don't understand how this applies. Thanks

bass boat is best for your case. its stable and handles waves well, goes anywhere for any type fishing and sits low on trailers for getting in and out off

and have a small aluminum ladder built at any metal fab shop and installed on the trailer for climbing out of the boat so no need to jump off the bow.

If you can find a deck boat for the amount of money you want to spend,I would give them a look. Some of them are set up similar to a pontoon boat. Lots of open space and comfortable seating. They take waves better than a pontoon boat IMO. You can put more horsepower on the back and run faster than a pontoon.

Try to find an older Champion Dual Console coastal series, setup like a bass boat but built for coastal.

Agree with others concerned about you safety and fishing solo...be safe regardless of your choice. Maybe hiring guides would be best bet to see if it’s something you want to sackle solo.

If you are patient you should be able to find a nice 5-10 year old 17-20' bay boat in this price range.
