Help Out First Time Turkey Hunter

Bought some land at the beginning of the year that has allowed me to finally be able to seriously start hunting. This will be my first year ever hunting turkey. What do I REALLY need and what are some thing’s that would be nice to have? What size shot? My Franchi won’t shoot 3 1/2” so what shell would be best in the 3”? List of gear? Best decoy? Not looking to unload the truck but I also understand that stuff isn’t cheap. Easiest call to use? Any advice you have for a 34 year old first time turkey hunter I’m all ears.
I’m also in Northwest Ga if that affects the gear recommendations.

Thermacell first and foremost.
Need shotgun with a modified or full choke. 6 shot up to 4, if there’s a turkey on the box even better. Anything else is optimizing versus needing, or increasing range.
Need camo. A face mask and gloves are needs, but you don’t need to match all over, just be broken up.
A slate call is the easiest to use and could be the end of it if you wanted. Learn to cluck and yelp. Cadence and not over calling is what matters. Mouth calls are fun and easy to learn once you find one you like and start keeping it in the truck to practice.
Everything else is just to make life easier. You’ll want pockets and a seat pad that’s easily carried.

I'd start with learning the turkeys. Go listen for gobbles. Big old timber near water is a good place to start. Go in there in the dark, no flashlight. Full camo even if season not open. Headnet too. Listen for gobbles. Listen again after flydown. See where they go, mainly by gobbles and hen yelps. Learn. File it in memory, slip out the area, and do it again right before opener.
Guns, calls, you'll get that. But put time in the woods.

You think this man is going to be doing fly downs??

I recommend finding someone to go out with the first time or two to show you the ropes….turkey hunting requires a lot of expertise that you can’t get anywhere besides seeing it done. You will either love it or you’ll hate it….there is no in between!

Alot of times they just jump off the limb and sail down quietly , anyhow.
Most of the racket is evening fly up

A fly down can be better than calling.

Everyone here is telling truth. Whats your hunting experience? I have been turkey hunting for a decade and didn’t kill my first birds until last year, (Don’t let that freak you out, I was so unlucky, fellow hunters believe I was cursed or something and I had no choice but to hunt 3-5 year old Mobile area swamp birds, which are very very hard to hunt.) And I killed two in one week. (One was definitely thanks to help from this board.) I thought I was just terrible at it until a few years a started taking pro hunters, ringers etc with me and they all gave me pointers on little things but said i ok
Things I have learned.
The damn things can see a flying gnat at 100 yards. Opposite of deer, any movement can give you away.
Listen to the podcast etc as you drive to get basics you can be a regular hunter or use Ray Eyes method etc.
Get you a good comfortable pair of boots, you can walk 5 to 10 miles a day in. Spring camo that will let u blend in. The walmart shite is fine.
The thermocell is a must have, I spray my clothes with permian too at beginning of the season. But bug spray doesn’t freak them out like deer.
For your area:
Lynch 101 box call (get on ebay)
Any decent slate call few sticks (opt)
sandpaper and rubber bands
owl and crow call (must have )
And get someone that is an experienced hunter to go with you scouting and hunting. i am old and if I die in the woods, Its ok. but much much safer and easier to hunt turkey as a team with a caller (which rn is not u) and a shooter. that’s you bro. Get a few types of shell and practice with them.
I would just send a box of shite as I have way too much but I am helping a local first time guy this year,

Woodsmanship. Know your property you are going to hunt. You can kill every turkey in the woods by simply getting to the spot he wants to be before he gets there. It’s knowing where he wants to be that’s the hard part
Going with it taking someone with you that knows what they are re doing will cut off years and years of future screw ups learning what Not to do
Also do not take any advice from tuthilltiger I think they tied a couple rio turkeys to a corn feeder for him to finally kill one

First and most importantly, you need turkeys.
With that out the way I’d say full camo, head to toe. Leafy suits work really well.
Spend the money and get some tss (find some apex 3’)
A simple box call will do but I’d buy several mouth calls and practice a lot.
Comfortable boots go along way if you’re planning to run and gun. I sometimes cover just about our entire 600 acres in a day.

EXACTLY. The strut zone at 8:15-8:30 abouts. Thats why time pre scouting and hanging around after flydown, to listen for the mid morning gobbles, is important. I myself, do not even mess with roost hunting any more.

They are right about knowing your property. It’s really helped my deer hunting as well. But I pretty much walk all of our 600 acres during turkey season.
I don’t think you can be a good woodsman anymore, unless you are retired or something. To me it’s just like fishing. When i was fishing 2/3 days a week I was good. It’s almost not possible going 3/4 times a month
