I am currently shooting a Remington 870 3-1/2" pump. I would like to get a semi automatic for next years duck season, but I dont want to spend a grand. Is there any semi-auto 12 gauge that shoots 3-1/2" that is worth a shite for ~$600? New or used? Will I just have to cough up $800 or $900 for a decent one? Suggestions?

Stoeger m3500 is probably the cheapest 3.5" auto to fit your needs

A300 outlander is a better gun and value but only shoots 3"

A300 Extrema will shoot 3.5" but they are like 950 I believe

They actually replaced it with the A350 Xtrema and it sells for $1k.

To the OP: What makes you have to have a 3.5" gun? The A300 is a great value and the black version can be had for $650 and maybe $600 if you find a sale.

Unless you're shooting lots of geese I don't see the need for 3.5"

Even for geese, 3"BB is fine. If that doesn't knock them down, don't shoot

Also for what it's worth I shoot an 870 as well and my next purchase will likely be an a300

Well my boss takes me one three or four goose hunts a year, so Id like to be able to use just one gun for both geese, and ducks. A friend of mine just got an A300, and i like everything about it except that it doesnt shoot 3.5".

I have all three and the outlander gives you the best bang for your buck . The main thing I have learned is to keep em clean .

I wouldnt get rid of the 870, but if you dont mind parting with it, you could probably get $300+ for it. If you can wait until next duck season, watch for sales and rebates, most places price match and you can get a hell of deal if you play it right. You could easily get a $1200 gun for around $8-900 throughout the year then tack on the additional $300 from the 870 and you will be in the $5-600 range and not be settling.

Eta: could trade in 870 at some places too. Anybody have a clue how well Cabelas compensates trade ins?

Or you could look at a place for a nice used one. My buddy picked up a Browning gold for $5-600 when Cabelas first opened in BR and is still using it with not a single problem.

Yeah, i would prefer to not sell my 870. Its at least 10 or 12 years old, and has only been used for hunting the last three years, so its in great shape, but i want to go to semi auto and synthetic camo or even black if i had to.

3.5" shells are a waste of money and your shoulder
as stated above a 3" BB is all you need for goose hunting
go down to 2 3/4 or 3" 2's for ducks

If you're shooting ducks where you're supposed to, 3" is more than enough.

I started this same thread before the season started. With the advice of the OB I bought the Beretta A300 Outlander. I love the gun. I've seen 3 guns jam so far this season, and never have I had a single hiccup with the gun (about a case of shells through it so far).

I don't baby the gun, but it's of note the camo pattern has chipped in spots and is showing signs of wear in spots. First gun with a camo pattern on it, so this may be the norm. Also the gun came out the box fitting me very poorly. The first weekend I came home with a black eye and a bruised shoulder trying to adjust to the gun. I brought it to Jim's to get it shimmed. Guy took it in the back and adjusted something in the stock, and it fit me perfect. Free of charge...

The gun was also dropped and sat in 3ft of water for about 30 seconds opening weekend. I almost had a heart attack... Found it, shook it around, and continued shooting.
