bbvdd...thanks for the specifics on brands. Gotta look for left dominant models ideally, but I have shot a lot of right dominant models and for bolt action guns, its really not a bother.

colorado...I think it would be nice to have some old beat up surplus gun lying around. Quick question, do you happen to hunt in colorado? If so, what do you use?

+1 more. Savage will be my next brand. Reliable and good on the pocketbook.

My favorite gun is a Savage 116FSS weather warrior. SS and synthetic, perfect for the weather here. About $500, will take a beating and is accurate.

And I would suggest grenades for the bears. Or a really slow running hunting partner.

My dad always tells this joke...

Guy walks into a hunting shop in Alaska getting ready to head out on a camping trip and wants a pistol for protection. He asks the guy at the counter for to see the .45 revolver, he likes the feel of it and asks the guy to ring it up. As he's ringing it up, the guy behind the counter asks if the camper wants to file the sights off. "Why would you do that?" asks the camper, "So when the bear shoves it up your arse, it will hurt just a little less."

I am not in Colorado right now, but when I was, I hunted elk with an 8mm surplus Mauser and aperture sights. The places we hunted involved a LOT of hiking and stalking and not many shots outside of 150yards. All the elk I killed were cows, and all of them (except 1) were killed inside 100yards. If I had hunted a place with more long shots, I would certainly have scoped the gun, and I am sure it would have been great.

That same gun would hunt whitetails here in South Carolina all day long... except I left it with my buddy in Colorado, and I use my .30-30 here.

I bought a Mosin Nagant a little while back for $120, and I know you can get them even cheaper now, and its pretty dang accurate. If I scope it, I know it will hunt deer out to 300yds, and would be suitable for elk with the right load. I probably wouldn't use it on anything bigger or more dangerous.

Roger is steering you right with the .338 I think, and if you are going to move to Alaska, you should seriously consider it. If you've got the money, just buy that. It is a little heavy for whitetails, but so what? If your budget is tight and the type of hunting you do will allow it, and you'll be wanting a .338 later.. then think about a used .30-06, .300winmag, or even a surplus rifle for now.

+1 on the weather warrior, my dad has one in .270 and I love it. I don't remember the exact model but mine's blued barrel synthetic stock, built in mag with accutrigger. I like it, bought it as a combo deal with a simmons scope on it. The accutrigger is enough of a reason to go with a savage IMO, I love it.

.270 for whitetail down here would be plenty gun is assume.

Much more then enough. IMO, for a one gun man, it's hard to beat either a .308, .270, or .30-06 If you're hunting elk and smaller.

Past elk, the belted magnums are probably your best bet.

If your talking about the single shot, not sure a good idea where bears can eat you.

I don't have much experience with it, but have heard good things about them. Just the other day on my laptop when the wife caught me. She knows the look.

Most scared I've ever been in my life was when I was walking through 8 foot alders near the Moraine creek stepping over bear droppings and nesting areas with nothing but my fly rod. The guide laughed when I asked if he carried a firearm...The bears were everywhere, kinda freaky.

You get used to it. It's fun after a while. They are predictable critters.

Roger... how popular are guns like the Marlin .444 up there? Or .45/70? A lot of guys use those for elk in Colorado.

My parents live in Anchorage now, been about 6.5 years. My dad worked in oil and gas and finished a 5 year contract a last year. They decided to stay because they loved it so much and made a lot of good friends.

Where in AK do you live? Nvm...I see you are in Juneau. Haven't made it there yet. Still have plenty of exploring to do!

Sounds like the typical Alaska story....come for a few years and decide to stay. It's a huge state, several lifetimes could be spent here and you would never cover it all. Have fun trying....
