Has anyone ever installed a UV light in their central A/C?

We noticed a musty odor from the vents when the a/c kicks on after being in heating mode for a couple of weeks. I've been looking into it, and I think I'm going to install a u/v light over the evaporator coil.
Has anyone done this? Any recommendations? Brand? Location?

We are getting out our ductwork replaced this week.
Yes, we are getting one put in and it’s the best decision ever.

Just have a professional come out and clean the ductwork and air handler. Wasting your money on snakeoil claims, UV-C can inactivate bacteria and viruses if given enough exposure time but the air traveling through your system is moving too fast and you can't afford a commercial-grade system with the intensity to be even partially effective. That diagram is complete bullshite too, UV-C does nothing to odor, chemicals, etc. Get the system cleaned, put in high-quality filters, and keep them changed out when needed. Also make sure that the return air isn't leaking in from places that are bypassing the filters.

Clames,
I'm not expecting it to clean the air. I just want it to keep the evaporator coil free of mold/mildew. I know that most of the other claims are hokey, but my symptoms indicate an issue in the evaporator. The smell never occurs when the furnace is running, only the a/c. The light shining on the coil absolutely should, at the very least, hinder mold/mildew growth on and around the evaporator.
I actually had River City One Hour Air come out and the guy basically said, it looked fine, was probably a dry trap on the drain line. I took him at his word because I wasn't smelling it. Well, it was cold outside. When the last warm spell hit, the a/c kicked on and instant funky.
This is a 3 year old house. We are the second owner, so I can only speak to my time in the house, but I run Merv 14 filters with carbon filtration. I will go up there in a week or two and clean it myself, because the pro I paid didn't fix shite. I can buy a UV light for under $200 and have extra peace of mind.

The guy left about 45 minutes ago, cleaned the coil and installed the light.

We are getting ours put in on Friday.
We had old ductwork that had to be replaced. No more high energy bills

And it's going to do absolutely nothing. Your problem is that the return air register is leaking and the air is getting around the filter.

Sounds like OP has Dirty Sock Syndrome. They make a coated coil that is supposed to eliminate this but it usually goes away once the coil is wet with condensate water

So how does one fix the problem?

I don't think that's the case. The odor certainly isn't that strong. It also only seems to occur when the a/c hasn't run in a while. From what I see, dirty sock is more prevalent with heat pumps. My system is a/c and gas furnace.

My brother owns a HVAC company and has one installed in his house. He swears by it.

The science behind installing one or two at the coil is totally sound. UV light absolutely kills and hinders the growth of fungus and bacteria. Notice how mildew is only a problem on shaded parts of your house.
Again, some of the claims are not accurate. It will not do much to kill spores suspended in the air. It will not eliminate food smells. It will kill mold and bacteria on surfaces illuminated by the light. The coil happens to be where it is most likely to grow.
I likely do have an issue with air bypassing the filter, too. I already plan to address that with some weatherstripping on the filter. I'm probably just going to do it all at once since I have to climb in the attic to change the filter.

Regarding the claims being made in that image that was posted, it looks like that system is more than a light. It looks to have the top part has active filtration, probably activated carbon. That would help with smells and the such.

That is what I have, the dirty sock syndrome. I am hoping this fixes it.

Where are you located? We install a uv system called an air scrubber. It is one of the best products in this category. We are located on the northshore but do travel in about a 50 mi radius. You can check out their site for more information. It's made by a company called Aerus. air scrubber site

I'm in Madisonville, what's the price?

Send me an email ecoairsouth@gmail.com. We technically aren't allowed to publish pricing online.

Also this is a good youtube video explaining how the air scrubber works for those interested. air scrubber youtube (not our company)

No but I have a bipolar ionization generator in my air handler, kills mold ,virus ,bacteria. My HVAC dealer sold it to me,seems to work.I usually get sinus infection, bronchitis every winter, haven’t had it last two years. We don’t fry food often but used to have to light a candle to get rid of the odor!now the odor is gone in about 30 minutes.I have no idea how this works but I don’t have static electricity issues in the winter like I used to before they installed this device.
