Got some good meat this year but kicking around the idea of next year trying to get a nice one for the wall. 160 class or bigger. How much do there type hunts run and where to start? Is 4-5k high low or about right? Where are the best places to go? Texas? Illinois?

Mike at WTHO has a phenomenal reputation. I've never hunted with him but plan to in a year or two for axis or mule deer.

I'd say that's a good ballpark for free range private land guided hunts. Probably need to book now for next fall. My brother helps guide near the SD/NE border and that's what they charge for a week of gun hunting I think. They're booked for the foreseeable future though or I'd point you in their direction.

I did semi guided. Guide shows us pictures of deer in area and where we can hunt. From there you can go out whenever you want. Once you kill a deer they come help you track it and clean it. They also took excellent pictures for me. You have to bring your own food tho.

Semi guided ran about 2.5 - 3 thousand after license and tags and everything

Where do you live? There might be a 160” close by?

We did Kansas DIY private land for a while. In seven trips, my top two were 157” and 150” with a bow. The most we paid was $750 per person.

Be aware that a 160” is big anywhere. You could easily be disappointed.
Also, mule deer are in a bad downturn.

I can highly recommend SOE hunts with Mike Stroff in Uvalde TX. In my opinion, he has one of the best low fence operations in Texas. The lodge and food are great, and the guides treat you like a king. You will see multiple 170 class deer, and you can bow or gun hunt. I killed a 186 last year and a 191 this year. I really can’t say enough about Mike’s operation and his ranches. It will cost you around 5800 for a buck up to 170, and you add 2000 for anything over 170. Good luck with your hunt.

If you like golf then this place is fire. Also, they have a freshwater redfish pond. It’s legit, golf, hunting, fishing, sporting clay course, cigars, hot tub, infinite pool. Some guy from south Louisiana owns it.
