My hds5 just went out, I've got a thru hull style transducer. Just trying to find a cheap GPS. I'm leaning toward the eagle 7. My dad looked and said "external transducer to be mounted to hull" or some crap. Im pretty sure we can just plug in the existing transducer to the unit and not buy a whole new one and have to drill into a glass hull.
Anyone have experience with this?

It seems like you might need a split shot transducer
eagle transducer

Whatever you do, don’t drill into the hull. Get a stern saver pad for transducer.

I thought no way that they would hold but 2 years and a lot of 60+ mph runs later it’s still on there.

I wanted to avoid getting a new transducer period since we have one already.

Here's the one I have. Use sealant to secure to hull not the screw holes.

I bought my current boat 15 years ago. I purchased a Garmin 541s. It is easy to use and has never failed me. If I replace this unit, I would purchase another Garmin.

You might be able to and you might not. The note about external transducer just means that particular SKU comes with a transom mount transducer. You should be able to buy just the screen.

Do you know exactly what transducer you have in the hull right now?

Just my opinion - the best thing to do is through-bolt and seal a piece of 1" starboard to the transom so that you can recklessly drive mounting screws into it until it gets too cheesed up to use anymore and then swap it out with a new one, if you're someone prone to swapping out transducers and mounts super often.

I bought a Stern Saver and epoxied it on my transom before I knew any better. In hindsight, I'd have done what I proposed above or spent the time to do a good thru-hull installation.
