Vanilla extract and rubbing alcohol in a squirt bottle. Won’t say it’ll help with mosquitoes but will surely keep the knats off you. You won’t smell all fruity and most people have the stuff to make it at home already.

What are these gnats yall are talking about? We don't have anything like that here on the mountain. Are they really that bad? Do they bite? Are you talking about what we call "no see ums"? Edited to add: Is that what yall are talking about? LINK

Southside Produce sells large bottles of Vanilla for about $8.00. I bought one last week and sprayed myself and the kids down while we were in Grand Isle and didn't have a problem with gnats at all. The weekend before we got wore out using Off.

Yes, I have been using it for years. It's very effective, but you have to reapply more often. We even took some to Bahamas' to deal with the no-see-ums.
Also - Have your wife/girlfrield order the first bottle so there are no weird stares or questions when you get home from "fishing" and smell... not like fish...

quote:imagine 100s of little small mosquitos all trying to get you at once. They have some sort of acid in there bites that irritates the skin and causes little red marks. The actual bite does not hurt but when you have 100s of them it is aggravating more than you possibly could understand

So Off works better than the Amber Romance? I am not looking for good smelling, I am looking for something to keep the gnats off of me
Bug spray works for mosquitoes and other bugs. Buffalo gnats are repelled quite well by Amber Romance or by "Bug Soother" (sold at Walmart).
Or by homemade mixture of 50% water and 50% vanilla extract. LINK Mix some up, fill a small spray bottle and you're GTG.

I must be allergic to them or I am dealing with something else (but have been convinced by a few people that they are gnats).
I have been bitten by every insect that has every flown in south Louisiana for over 50 years but I have no clue what I am dealing with. The last couple of weeks have been worse and as mentioned, several people claim they are gnat bites.
Still not completely convinced but I know they are not mosquitos, or spiders, or bees, or horseflies, etc.
These bites do not sting. They itch, swell, turn light red, etc. The bite area goes back to normal in 2-3 days.
Anyone else have this reaction?
If not gnats, what else could it be besides what I listed above?
PS...there are usually 4-5 bites on me (or at least react this way).

Every mom in our neighborhood buys this stuff and keeps it on hand at the soccer, baseball, etc. fields for the gnats. I use it also. It works pretty dang well at keeping the biting gnats away. The gnats around the fields are terrible at times also, so I would highly recommend this stuff.

Gnats have never been a deal breaker if the fish are biting. But last year we got into some deer flies ( some people call them biting flies) and we had to pack it up and leaving spots on multiple occasions. They are attracted by the color blue and most of my boat is blue. (Go figure) I got me a blue bucket in the boat now and some sticky stuff I got from the internet. Supposedly you hang the bucket and smear the stickum on the bucket and they all get stuck on the bucket when they land

Yeah, we have those, too. And they bite. We call em "zuzu flies" because of the sound they make when buzzing around your head before they land and bite.
