I know...adopt don't shop
Any reputable breeders that can be recommended? I think the wife is finally giving the green light on getting one, but want to avoid the bad breeders, etc. I know i can google and go see how the pups are kept, etc.....just looking to get some personal recommendations if anyone has any

Assuming you're a grown arse man...buy a dog if that's what you wanna do. The adopt don't shop contingency are nut jobs.

Couldn't agreee more... The only way to know what you are getting and be able to avoid problems such as hip displacia, bad elbows, shoulders and possible eye problems
Make sure bitch and sire are CERF and OFA and generations as far up the pedigree as possible

I lucked out and got a great dog (Lab/GSD), but not all mutts are winners.
Next dog will probably be a purebred GSD, so definitely interested in this thread.

any pros/cons of males vs females? I've always owned male dogs...but they were outside dogs and my dad always had males to make sure he didn't have to worry about the dog getting knocked up

I had a white GSD that was female and from a breeder. She wasn’t “show quality “ because she had 2 white toenails and some pink on her nose. She was sold at a discount with verbiage in the contract to have her spayed and not breed her. I had no problem with that and wanted to let you know that could be an option if you’re not looking to breed whatever dog you buy.
She was the smartest dog I’ve ever had. She was trained to kennel in the bathtub - GSDs shed ALOT. I could just wipe the hair out of the bathtub. I felt like she understood everything I said and not just basic commands. She was the first female I ever owned and it was an eye opening difference from a male. I found her very easy to house train and I felt that she was every bit as protective as a male. She weighed 90lbs but looked larger as she was long haired.
Just know that GSDs, especially from working bloodlines, require a ton of excersize and mental stimulation. I could take her for a run twice a day and she was still full of energy. Without those two things, they can be terribly destructive.
I have a Scott American Bulldog (male), and a half Amstaff half English Bulldog (female). I wish those bastards listened like her. I see the don’t shop/ adopt comments and I’ll tell you that you’re going to get what you pay for. Hips certified is a must as GSDs are prone to hip displasia.
All that being said, my female had a high prey drive but was the smartest dog I’ve ever owned.
My two cents. Hope it helps.

First of all, what are you looking for in your dog? A family pet that won’t have much for a “job”?
Or are you looking for this dog to work, such as track, protect, sport, etc?

Not sure your price range but there’s a local guy that is breeding some and his blood line is supposed to be top notch. Believe he got his dogs from Germany. If interested let me know I could try to get you his info.

Family dog...i have 2 sons. It doesn't have to be the next RinTinTin, but it won't be a lay around all day and do nothing dog. Play outside, go for a boat ride, fetch, listens, protects my family if needed, etc. I can take it to the park and run with it.

This is probably a dumb question. When I see side pics of GSD's their hips always seem to be lower than they should. Why do they stand like this? I'm used to Labs and their back is basically parallel to the ground. Here are some examples.

It seems there are some guys in here with a lot more knowledge than me. Maybe they can chime in. It’s in the standard for the breed. It will be more pronounced in “show quality” dogs.

Always great when Coot shows up in a dog thread.
To the OP: if you have any problems with the new puppy, page Coot. He’ll point you in the right direction.

Does anyone have a link to that thread?

I put down 2 more dogs since then and think about that thread ever since. It ain't easy doing it and I cry inside, but this world is full of enough pussies so I do what needs to be done.
