Hit Lake Martin yesterday and found 6 cottonmouths, 2 broad-banded water snakes, 5 ribbon snakes, and 4 black-masked racers. Also saw several turtles laying eggs. Fun day.

He most certainly had bad intentions.

What’s up with the racer’s anus?

It’s protruding because they like to mush you and poop on you when you catch them. It can be a problem if they go full prolapsed cloaca. I let it go pretty quickly once I noticed that - don’t like to see any harm come to the snakes we catch.

How did you catch that ribbon? I’ve been trying to catch this one in my yard for 3 weeks. Those little things are fast.

Yeah they can be quick - you just have to be quicker. I caught 4 of the 5 ribbons we saw. That little ribbon made me bleed more than the racer did.

Only caught 1 out of 6. It was a weird day because I don’t usually see that many there, but the first 6 snakes we found were the 6 cottons. They were all right by the water’s edge and were very flighty - not a single one stood its ground or gaped. Just missed one really big one that I wanted bad.

Usually see a lot more broad-banded water snakes than cottons there - last trip we saw 18, but only 2 broad-bandeds this trip.

We have a ton of racers around our house in luling. One bit my kid twice on the leg when he was 4. He walked up on where the snake was resting. I've also seen them fly across the yard literally "standing up". Wild.

Man, I see those around my house on the bayou all the time. Was afraid to mess with them, but now I'm just going to go ahead and pick them up and play with them. Gonna let the grand kids play with them, too.

Racers, in my experience, always have attitudes.

Do you worry about infections from the snake bites?

Never. Been bitten literally hundreds of time over the past 50 years and never had an issue. As kids, we were catching water snakes in a sewage canal and got bitten regularly and still never had an issue - thinking back on those days, those snakes had to have some nasty bacteria in their mouths . On occasion as kids if we were by the house we might go inside a pour some peroxide on it at mom’s urging, but 99% of the time you just wipe the blood on your pants and keep on keeping on.

Even something of decent size like that racer doesn’t hurt much - not NEARLY as bad as a wasp sting. Fear of nonvenomous snakes is unwarranted.
