A trusted boat mechanic who works on all my outboards we use on the catfish farm told me once do not put sea foam in the gas.

That's interesting. Most of the mechanics back home swear by it. We don't have ethanol in our gas so I mainly just keep my fuel tank filled or completely empty and don't really add any additives anymore. I do keep an eye on the fuel water separator.

Yet another makes a case for using ethanol gas as a way to eliminate small amounts of water. I honestly don't know what to think.
I think your engine has a small water filter/separator built in. I think they can be drained, and obviously they can be replaced at some recommended interval.

My Mercury dealer recommends adding a water-separating cartridge filter (the kind that has a "spin-on" cartridge about the size of an oil filter) LINK.

Like you, I'm not sure what's really needed. I haven't had an "add-on" filter on my bass boat engines for over 15 years. But we do add them to all of our work boats - never know where the boats might be when they need fuel, and thus don't know what the fuel quality might be.
