Does anyone know where frozen skipjack can be purchased in 60 lb cases?

Yes. It’s a bait shop in Livingston parish on the St. Helena line on HWY16.
Call and make sure he has them. With supply chain issues sometimes he maybe put a day or 2. (225) 892-4114

P maws in Springfield is where I normally get them but I don’t buy 60 pound cases. Might be worth inquiring with them.

quote:Off topic, somewhat, is a skipjack the fish that looks like a baby tarpon and scales fall off when they are bouncing around in the boat or when you grab them?

What’s the difference between skipjack and shad? And I’m very curious, crawfish bait, crab bait….?

I know a skipjack is a type of shad but if you go to a bait store you can buy either. Where I catfish, if you throw a sabiki, skipjack is what you catch and that’s what you see jumping out the water.
If I buy frozen shad it’s mushier on the hook and the catfish seem to prefer the skipjack. I’m not sure if people use it for anything else other than catfish. 60 pounds is a whole lot so I’m curious too.

Skipjack herring is the best catfish bait I've ever used. I have lived in places where it is easy to get but I think the Mississippi River area and Ohio River area has good skipjack.
We don't have any here in Oklahoma so I catch live shad with a cast net. If I could net skipjack, I would love it. I think skipjack is oilier but I could be wrong.

I know when I used to fish the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, I would go out in the spring and catch about 200 skipjack below dams on crappie jigs and freeze them with salt. I'd rig 3 jigs on one line and you can catch 2-3 at a time.
I've never had as much luck using store bought frozen skipjack or shad. Now where I'm at, I just throw a 6' Fitek cast net for gizzard shad and bigger threadfin. This time of year if you want to net shad, you need to be on the water about 3-4 am or wait until the evening and you can net them pretty well. I hopefully will be able to catch about 100 this evening because I am danger low.
