Well considering it would have to go through the 12 in thick soft target hit the concrete backstop then travel back through a 12" thick soft target before it was a danger I would be willing to take the risk if I felt my life was in danger. Definitely wouldn't do it for fun

I am not advocating practicing in this fashion but certainly we have all seen some really questionable training practice videos. There is some practical application for me though as I frequently shoot trapped hogs. We rarely (although sometimes we do) set traps on concrete, but the traps are made of heavy gauge steel. We did have one fella in town get shot by a ricocheting 357 round that went through a hogs neck hit a trap and went back into the shooters leg.



For a more real world example, how close would you fire rounds into a 12" deep ballistics gel pressed against a hardened backstop? Does 18" of muzzle relief seem safe to anyone? Most self defense shootings occur well within a 10 ft range.

Is shooting a fmj bullet of would be scared shitless.

With an expanding hollow point, like a little safer, but still in the scared shitless category.

But this is probably the last thing I would be thinking about.

Could this be a good defense: "Victim has four holes, but we only shot twice. Bullet bounced off concrete."

I believe they said 6 shots were fired. Accounting for each of those rounds will be important and interesting. The report he was shot in the back may actually be a re entrance wound though, conceivably.

I shoot a 9mm hollow point at my hogs. I try to shoot at an angle so hopefully if it did ricochet, it wouldn't come back at me. Dad just shoots them with a .22 by just sticking it in the trap and putting it against their ear.

In response to your question, 100% safe to me. More of a risk of that bullet careening off of a bone on such a big guy.
