Going on my first ever fly fishing trip in a few weeks. What is an appropriate amount to tip the guide? Half day float trip in East Tennessee/North Georgia. Any other advice for a first timer is also welcome. Goal is to have fun and have some father-son bonding.

I went on the Holston River a few years ago. I think we each tipped $100 for half a day which was right over 20%. The guides seemed happy with that. Was a really fun trip.

I usually ask them what is normal LOL. I look at guided trips as a couple of friends spending the day together...haggling over money is not conducive to friends having a good time. Most guides are pretty decent sorts and they have an idea what their time is worth...if they come up with an outrageous figure I will laugh it off and tell 'em that ain't happening LOL. Never had an issue and never had a trip I felt like I wouldn't be welcomed back...been on a bunch I wouldn't pay for again but that is a whole other story....

Usually works just fine.

Also just follow the restaurant guidelines of trip cost....

When I was learning to fly fish, I booked a guide a couple times. Dude was really good and put me onto some good browns, bows and cuts. I tipped $100 both times.

As far as tips go, practice casting before you go. I fished a lot in S Louisiana before I moved. Bass, specs, everything down there is bait casting and wrist action. Do not break your wrists fly casting. Keep the wrist locked. Arm movement should be 10 oclock to 12 oclock and don't rush the forward throw. Let the line load on the back cast before moving your arm forward. Also, pay attention to your drift and how to mend your line. Too fast or too slow and you won't get much action.
