Watched the new episodes of meat eater last night on Netflix and was intrigued by the PA flintlock season. Makes me want to add one to the collection. No ffl and the ability to make your own powder and ammo is appealing. Any of you own one and have recommendations as to brand? Was looking at the traditions hawken rifle

I have a Hawken and a Traditions Kentucky rifle. Lots of fun to play with. My brother makes his own powder. There is nothing like the pffffft, flash, boom and being surrounded by that sweet, stinky smoke cloud!

How is the build quality on the traditions? Also can you shoot saboted slugs or just patch and round ball?

I have a Traditions / Hawken's style I picked up on Gunbroker for around 150. Its not a flint lock but its a blast to shoot and pretty dang accurate out to around 100 yds which is probably my limit with my eye sight. I don't really understand why states got away from traditional BP.

Edit: Sasquatch Man is an older series that pretty good to watch if you like traditional hunting.

The traditions is ok. You can tell they are economy muzzleloaders. If it were me, I’d look into a Lyman Great Plains rifle.

As for round balls and sabots, that depends on rifle twist. A lot of the commercially made “traditional” muzzleloaders are usually offered with two different twist rates. Sometimes three different twist rates. The fastest twist rates like maybe 1-24” should shoot sabots but I don’t think that’s common in the traditional style rifles. You’ll more likely to find something around 1-40ish and some slower twists like 1-66ish. The 1-40 twist should shoot round balls or buffalo style balls well.

If you want to use round ball for deer, the 54 calibers are supposed to do a better job on game. For sabots and buffalo bullets a 50 is good

Wheeler Wildlife Refuge that is along the Tennessee River has a flint lock hunt every year. It is Jan 3 - 15 this year. I always wanted to buy one for this purpose but just never did.

Went to PA on a business trip and we were driving back to Williamsport Airport and saw the EuroOptic store. Stopped in and was perusing around and they had a PA Flint lock, Coworker bought it, no FFL, Hand made by a local guy there. Not helpful to OP post but was a fun trip, nice rifle and cool back ground story of the rifle. May call there and see if they have any new hand made custom ones, a worker there was apart of some association and they all hand make and sell them.

My old man killed a few with his percussion .50 with mini-balls. Worked damn good from what I remember, accurate too.

Can you still buy real black powder on the shelf? I haven't seen a jug of goex in years.

I think Goex was the last American company still making black powder and I’m hearing the just shut down production recently. Still a couple European companies that make it but I’ll bet it’s expensive. I haven’t shot real black in forever because no one has it in local stores.
