Hey all

I am going on a fishing trip with some buddies 10/17-10/21. We will be fishing big lake and around Hackberry primarily trout, reds, flounder etc.

I am not great with a bait caster so to save frustration on myself and my buddies I am going to take a couple of my spinning reels.

What is the best type of line to put on for this kind of trip? Right now I have old line and it needs to be replaced anyways so I will re-spool for this trip.

TIA
Clint

For baitcasters, yes.

For spinning reels, 20lb is plenty.

I prefer 17lb nanofil or 18lb gliss. If you want to go the traditional braid route, 20lb Suffix 832 would be my recommendation.

Yea I rarely use 20lb. and never anything bigger. I'm a 15 to 18 lb. saltwater guy. And 12 to 15lb freshwater.

30# and 40# just really has not practical application for the way I fish.

respool with 15 lb mono and clean and regrease your reels, then test your drag settings a lot for smooth release

when reels sit for a long time the drags can get sticky and not work right

the last thing you want is to have a 28" red on the line and break off because you drag locks up.

What makes you say that? I've used 4lb, 8lb, and 14lb gliss on spinning reels with excellent results.

breaks much easier than power pro, and it gets tangled on everything! i've always used power pro, but when i heard about gliss i wanted to try it out bc i love a thin line, but the results were terrible. and trust me i gave it a legit shot, i've tried 3 different spools, and used it for almost a year. i loved how thin it was, but it did not hold up at all, i had to go back to power pro.

I use suffex 832 in 50 lb. Spool the reel half way with 15lb big game then uni to uni knot to braid. Finish the spool with braid. I've never had a fish get to the mono. I use the line for a season take my rods in the yard and un roll until I get to the mono. Then walk to the other end and respool it onto the reel.

You can't compare it to the same lb test as braid. It's not braid. I absolutely love it.

15lb test is 15lb test whether its braid, mono, or whatever. thats like saying a ton of bricks is heavier than a ton of feathers.

No, no it's not. Gliss and Nanofil break much closer to their rating than braid does. Much more like mono. If you're used to the strength of 15lb braid, you'll be very disappointed with both NanoFil and Gliss.

Yes. 18 for light applications and 40 for heavy.
