Simply, can an individual (in proper legal standing) get an FFL? iirc you have to have a business license to get an FFL, in which case can someone set up a LLC as Joe's pew pew shop. Not be a very good business person and not have any customers or work on any guns but still have an FFL?

Or forget it because having an FFL puts a giant target on your back and the ATF will make you life miserable.

TIA

I looked into it briefly. I think you need a physical location or storefront. And once you have the license, the ATF can search/audit that location at anytime. No need for warrant or anything. So if you truly don't do any actual business, you leave yourself open to the ATF coming check. I'd at least think you'd have to do FFL transfers for a small profit and would want the location separate from my private home or collection.

Good friend of mine has been an ffl for many years and come November he will not renew his ffl.
He stated that the ATF no longer protects Americans, but makes them felons

That's what I was kind of think about doing. Mostly for myself but also F&F. I know there is a limit to the number of sales you can to before being considered a "dealer", but not sure about the exact number but don't imagine I'd ever approach it unless it's something ridiculously low.

Obviously a lot I don't know so It's nothing I'm planning to move no anytime soon. just looking for general info. Also kicking around the ideal of gunsmithing as a hobby business which mose courses offer assistance in setting up your FFL once complete but that's a pretty big investment for likely a hobby.

Thanks

From ATF:

Seems like typical three letter agency stuff where it’s just not worth the red tape and fees unless you’re in a position to really run it as a business. Wanting to be able to directly receive personal purchases probably isn’t gonna get approved.

Look carefully at the requirements for inspections, record keeping, etc…

If you have the FFL, I think you are good to do as many sales/transfers as you'd like. That's the license to do so. It allows the gun to ship to you directly and transfer to anyone. However now you are required to do the background check and maintain records. vs. not having to in a private transfer.

Depending on where you are located, you may be required to have an occupational license for a “gun store” and that has gotten tougher over the years.

Gave my FFL up after 30 plus years.
