I have a 3/4 pond on the farm that is leaking. I know that the leak is in the levee, because water is pooling behind it. My brother in law and I chopped down all of the woody trees that were growing the the pond side of the levee. I am 70 years old, and I am not going into the water. I have seen some videos in which people have used dye to try to find the leak; does this work? If this doen't work, I am wondering if anyone can refer me to a company that repairs pond leaks. The farm is north of Picayune. Thanks for your replies.

Check out the forums at Pond Boss. Tons of great information. Also, you can ask questions and get fast replies from knowledgeable folks.

I watch a guy named Bamabass on YouTube and he used this chemical mixture that you pour in the water and it turns to a sludge/slime which gets pulled into the leak as water escapes and clogs it. The sludge then hardens and permanently blocks the leak. I have no idea of the cost.

So what happens when those roots rot away?

That is Bentonite which is basically drilling mud; it costs $100 a bag.

Bentonite

Sort of. Bentonite itself is only truly effective if the pond is emptied and it is worked into the dirt. The stuff bama bass used is made to be sprinkled in the water and fill leaks.

Similar to a product called damit and it's pricey.

ETA to answer your question on repair. It will need to have all trees removed from the dam. Doesn't matter if they are on the backside or not. Then it will have to have the core trench redug and packed. Not sure how long your dam is but you're looking at thousands, 20k+ easily with how high dirt work is now.

You can find cat litter with it much cheaper. I was able to plug a few areas that were caused by either rodents or roots about 20 years ago with it. It’s still working.
