I got hooked on duck hunting last year on a lease in Garwood Texas although it was kind of a clown show. It was a collection of a ton of hunter groups and disconnected properties where the group leader had to text preferences and then you got random blind assignments. Even with all the hijinx of the lease manager, we had some good hunts and I am glad I did it. This year I have looked exhaustively for good leases and finally came across a couple that I think are going to be good leases.

I know people are always looking for duck leases (usually in Louisiana) so I wanted to offer up what I've seen in my search to those interested.

Leases to consider:
1. Texas Duck Ranch - the property location is great, the fields and blinds are good (saw them yesterday) and they have 2 3-person leases available for $7,500. The owner Jim Kowis seems like a nice guy. It's unique in that each group has a dedicated blind that only they hunt, as opposed to getting randomly assigned to different blinds each hunt. The downside is that if your pond is less desirable to the ducks for whatever reason, you're stuck with it the entire season.

2. Texas Six Shooters Club - This is an existing lease who picked up some adjacent property, and I think it's going to be dynamite based on what i have heard about this property and based on seeing the layout. There's about 10 ponds that are all good size ponds and they are spaced out pretty well. The lease manager Randy seems like a great guy and says over and over again that he's big on dogs and kids. He is selling single member leases for $2,600 but members are allowed to bring a guest at no charge, which is unique. He does ask that you don't bring the same person too many times although I don't think he gave an exact number for what is too many.

3. Riceland Waterfowl club - This lease is mostly in Eagle Lake but supposedly with some properties in Victoria and near Katy. The lease manager Jim is also a nice guy and he sells his lease on the fact taht they guarantees water, which has been a problem in Eagle Lake in recent years as I understand it due to LCRA restrictions. He charges $8,400 for a 6-man lease and would not offer anything less than that. He's got some new properties this year and some of them looked good but some of them looked pretty small too. I think he's relatively new to the lease game but seems to want to be doing it right.

Feel free to ask any other questions...hope this helps somebody who is thinking about getting on a lease. Duck hunts out there are a great way to enjoy the outdoors and I can typically be back in Houston by lunch, so I don't burn as many points with the wife for being gone all day.

I did leases for last 3 seasons south of El Campo. It was too inconsistent to do 4 hours (round trip) of driving in a morning. The problem with leases is that they don't rest their ponds nearly enough.

If you could afford it, Thunderbird Hunting Club.

I'm doing guided hunts and HOPS club - Hunt Other People's shite!

What leases were you on? Blessing Hunt club? I know what you are saying about resting the ponds. The guy who taught me everything I know last year and I are hunting together, maybe with one more, but we didn't have 6 this year.

I spoke with the head guy at thunderbird and they do have some openings and I am interested but it wasn't appealing to my buddy at the price point we were at.

Yep, Blessing. Had a few good hunts over the last three years.

Between inconsistent birds which was probably due to ponds not resting long enough, being too far to scout, too many blinds on a pond, blinds being sore thumb hamburger stands, it was an easy decision.

We took over several ponds that used to be on THC, Blessing put at least 2x as many blinds on a given piece of water as THC had.

I'm not sure if you've paid money to anywhere yet. But I'd ask for references of people that are returning members, and ones that decided to leave.
