How much do these shed?
I have 3 dogs, different coats on each. One has a thick fine hair, he shed a lot. My female has a thinner coarser hair and she sheds much less. The puppy from the other two is a mix and falls between the on the shedding...

Heaven help any baby rabbit that's gets in my yard. Got 4 this spring.
As to shedding, it really isn't that bad. They aren't double coated and are shorthaired(
) so it takes a little while to accumulate.

Does anyone breed wirehaired pointers around here? I'm interested in 1 eventually and know a good friend of mines dad who just got back from Germany with a pup.

They are GREAT with kids.
I concur...GREAT/AWESOME - Riley is from dyslexics last litter, our oldest son with DS (Down syndrome)was terrified of dogs. We decided on GSP and wanted a puppy so they could get used to each other - today they are inseperable and I feel they truly have a special bond, we only wish we had done it sooner. Riley is very laid back considering how much she puts up with, she is a very good companion for our family. She loves it oudoors whether it be fetching, swimming in the pool with the boys, or working in the woods with me. I would have another if my wife would let me....

Probably going to head out of state. Check [link=(uplandjournal.com)]Upland Journal[/link] for recommendations.

What's the difference if any in the two breeds?
Posted on 8/11/14 at 11:06 am to PapaPogey
Wire-hairs are a little bigger and are better water dogs from I have heard.

What about temperament?
Posted on 8/11/14 at 11:07 am to PapaPogey
There was a guy in Laffy at used to have some nice wirehairs
Don't cover as much ground as gsp
But do better in water and thicker cover

Any of y'all familiar with a guy last name Hardy from BR? From what I can tell, he's big into the GSP stuff.

I've had 3 GSP's. Word to the wise - be very careful in selecting a breeder and check references. I just had 2 from a breeder in Michigan - who I did not check out thoroughly - and the pups were great, but both died very suddenly before reaching age 2 of miocarditis (inflamed heart). They were wonderful companions/hunters, but it is so tragic losing a young dog - especially two.
I still have one GSP from a kennel in Oklahoma called Power Pointers. He's great and as sweet a dog as you will ever find. Not near as much of a hunter as the other two, but still very birdy. GSP's are my favorite breed having owned labs for most of my life. Goofy, funny, and usually highly energetic. Need a lot of exercise. They get bored if they are not challenged physically and mentally, then can become destructive.

I have 3. My female should be going into heat this October. They do just fine inside and outside. And out of the 3 we have, she's the best retriever for ducks. The stud we plan on using is completely finished as well. Great temperament, as far as kids go.

Do you have any experience with the wirehairs?

I do not. You wont find to many down here in Louisiana. Though I think for my next dog, that's what I'll get, they can do a little better with the cold water during duck season.

Yeah, that's my concern as well.

Its not to bad down here in louisiana, but if go up north with your dog it can be a problem.
