I have a few spots along a hardwood fringe following a bayou on a WMA that I plan on bowhunting a good bit this year.

How much do you think going squirrel hunting out there on Saturday will spook the deer? FWIW, I haven't seen anyone else on this particular area of the WMA before, so I doubt other people squirrel hunting it will be much of an issue.

ETA: Sorry, to clarify, I am considering squirrel hunting out there Saturday. I'm just wondering if it will mess up my future bow-hunting in the area. I have 0 concern about other people squirrel hunting it come Saturday morning.

No way I would do it unless I knew for sure the area sucked for squirrels. I have had many a hunter walk right under me. I have also had .22 bullets wiz by too close for comfort.

As a deer hunter on a WMA ask yourself, where will the deer be with people in the woods. Hunt those spots...

like I said, I doubt it will affect the deer that much

And the only reason I am considering it is that the area is loaded with squirrels. Big fat fox squirrels too.

I feel terrible today and did not fully read. Sorry.

I know of a lease where the people squirrel hunt hard opening weekend. They then do nothing bu deer hunt after that. Because they only rifle hunt, the woods gets a good break from human activity..

Well are you planning on bow hunting this coming week or will it be awhile? I may not be reading it correctly, but you have some priveate land that borders the WMA? If so, i wouldnt blast an area a day or two before i bow hunt it, but if it os going to be a week or two, it wont make any difference

NVM, i see. You will be fine hunting it this weekend.

Exactly. You have just as much right to hunt that area as the deer hunters. Wear your orange, though.

It isn't an issue of my right to be there, its a question of will it make deer in the same area in the coming weeks more nocturnal/more difficult to kill.

Basically, if I squirrel hunt the same area on Saturday that I plan on bow hunting later, will the squirrel hunting have an adverse impact on the future deer hunting?

unless you blast away in the area all season, it will not affect the deer

a few squirrels hunts here and there will not drive the deer away, or turn them nocturnal

they might change their habit for a day or 2, but they will forget about you running around missing squirrels after that

Maybe I should squirrel hunt a certain other WMA Saturday morning just to be sure I don't screw up my spot...

It is like the stock market, your actions of going or not going is not going to change the what the deer do. It is the action of all the hunters. Do what is in you best interest within the law and regulations of the WMA...

Let's assume for the sake of this discussion that I am all the hunters. Does that change you answer any?

Have you hunted this spot in past years? Have you ever seen other hunters? Unless you are hiking or paddling for miles through a swamp others know and will hunt the spot. If you have hunted it before and never run across other hunters then your squirrel hunting will still have little to no impact besides to the big buck in the area. He will know you are there, regardless...

Ok. This is what I was looking for. It's an easily accessible WMA but I am pretty confident no one else hunts where I will be. I know that sounds dumb/uninformed, but I have my reasons and am pretty sure. Maybe Saturday will prove me wrong.

If you give the spot time to cool down after you go blast some tree rats you should be fine.
