I hunt the area west of I-55. I guess technically it’s Maurepas Swamp, buts it’s closer to the Joyce WMA than the majority of the Maurepas Swamp WMA. When hunting WMA, I usually just pull my boat up to a decent looking spot (few but tall cypress), pack my climber a few hundered yards, and head up on up. Access isn’t that bad if you’re just looking to get up into a tree, granted the water levels are right. I’m a very casual hunter—don’t scout much, just mostly enjoy my quiet time in the swamp. With the water constantly flooding and running back out dry, It’s a whole different world in that WMA than most people are used to.

My pops is the Mac daddy of hunting that area. He is super dedicated and puts in hundereds of hours every year just to kill a few decent (monster swamp) bucks. He has to have three different boats to use for all the different water/weather conditions.

They have several different locations. Some are private and some aren't. I don't know all the road names.

I think he's referring to the fact that 1) it's a real pain to hunt 2) if you're not familiar with floating swamp and pirogues you'll probably end up with a wet arse, and 3) there's been about 4 monster bucks killed out there in the past 10 years. The numbers coming from other areas are much better. That may have a lot to do with points 1 and 2, but it's true no less.

I make a few hunts in Joyce every year and have been for 10-12 years. I hunt Joyce because I think the swamp is a beautiful place, but I hunt tensas when I'm trying to kill deer. If you're looking for a cool place to explore, then Joyce is great, and there are some deer to hunt. I just wouldn't get too excited about the hunting based on one article that talks about 2 notable deer killed in a couple year span.
