Edit: That isn’t a copperhead. It s a juvenile rat snake. Better put this down before some kid grabs a real copperhead.

Well, I’m at camp. I walked out the skinning rack and there he was.

I remembered someone posted a picture of one the other day and they said people confuse them with copperheads. So, I naturally picked him up and took a pic.

The copperhead has vertical pupils not round ones, as does rattlesnakes, and cottonmouths. Now the coral snake will have round pupils.

Friend I went to high school with just sent me a picture of one his son caught in the garage.

Check out the markings on the head. Almost looks like a skull. Prettt cool looking.

Wrong. This is not always true. Teague will be along shortly with the appropriate link(s) for that myth.

Yes it is. It baffles me that all the hardcore 'outdoorsmen' here can't distinguish fricking pit vipers from rat snakes. It is a less than 1 second simple damn determination.

Most of us can distinguish fricking pit vipers from rat snakes. Are you still insisting that copperheads, rattlesnakes, and cotton mouths always have vertical pupils? If so, yes, you are wrong. You might want to do some research before you double down on your statement. THAT is my point of contention. Sigh...This is just too easy: LINK LINK LINK These are all picture links, btw. Depending on light conditions, a pit viper may have round pupils. Normally, though, they do have vertical pupils. BUT not always.

That's true. I don't kill snakes so it doesn't matter to me. Having said this I've run across four copperheads and three cottonmouths on my property in the last three years. None were more than a foot long. Maybe I'd feel different if I came across a three and a half foot moccasin.

Referencing this link (article) from a post just this week concerning this subject. Teague posted this article and if you really insist on maintaining your opinion, I suggest you read the portion on elliptical eye pupils on American pit vipers and look at the picture. I sure don't want someone to get bit by a copperhead because they see round eyes and "know" it isn't venomous. LINK

I know a copperhead within milliseconds of seeing it. I don't look at pupils. I look for the Loreal pits. Really, I have no trouble identifying A contortrix.

And you are wise in not relying on or looking for just one characteristic to identify any snake.

I'm wiser for not killing snakes. I like them and I don't step on them. There is a certain beauty in the coloration of a copperhead. And they are pretty docile actually.
