I've always heard that mackerel, like many other fish that people don't often target, will taste fine if you cook it without putting in freezer first, but does not keep well.

ETA same goes for hardhead (as long as you cut out blood line).

Yea I have not had the frozen yet. I’ll try one day if I have extra to see for myself but these fresh, bleed out, and blood line cutout was good to go.

Another pomp in the box. Rest of the time has been hard tails and little remoras. Last go at it…

cut main throat vein. Soak in ice water until water is dark red.

Cook it that night.

You can do this with blue fish and they are tasty.

Used to surf fish daily when I lived and worked in Freeport, Tx. Best surf fishing I've ever done was at the mouth of the Brazos River. Oh to be young and dumb again.

I saw capn Doug do this in Hatteras.

I was about to toss my bluefish and he said,

“Don’t drop it. I’ll take it. “. Then he cut it and soaked it.

Then filet sliced it and gave it back to us and said to eat it tonight and save the drum for tomorrow.

Did a slight modification to my pocket Plano box for wade fishing. Been wanting to make the back half open concept so I can fit a few top water rigs in it. Now I don’t have to worry about hooking myself when I keep them in the front pocket.

Man the June grass is bad bad. Still hanging a bunch of small whiting and a remora but I can’t throw any artificiales except a top water with no luck.

Whiting is as good to eat as anything that swims when eaten fresh. Too bad you didn't pick up a few more

The First one was close to me keeping it. I got 4 more that were way small like the second pic. I have ate them before and would keep them if a little bigger.

Slow morning. Zero wind, almost zero waves. 2 hard heads a hard tail and pulled the hook on the one nice fish right at the waters edge. I had just casted out a jerk bait when one of the set rods bent.

Starting to get crowded…about time to drink

We got this one.

I don’t like shark fishing but the drum and whiting weren’t biting.

That’s a nice sized shark. How do you do your rig for them?

Yea the June grass is still bad. First day was nasty bad but it had gotten better each day. Pretty nice today but no waves or wind.

Half a skate on a drum rig. 4 oz wt and paddle it out.

At hatteras you don’t need to paddle it. Just toss it 30 feet and you’re deep enough.

I do t think it matter with sharks.
