Yea they are pretty powerful. I’d say these were about 3’. Rod setup could handle more so I’m game

I’d like to try setting one in the future. Just have to Handel them a certain way from what I understand. Not really feeling that this go around.

It would be a good thread for the surf fishers of the OB to post in as time goes on

First for me...pretty pumped. Smooth back puffer fish. Good fight.

Awesome man, fished a decent amount last week on 30a with my kids and only caught one whiting. No idea where the pomps were at? No one was catching though, I saw one red and one pompano caught all week with tons of people fishing.

I highly recommend changing those hooks out on those premise rigs, those cheap gold hooks are terrible.

I would think 30a area would be loaded up with the Pompano right now. I think the evenings are better the last week I hear but other obligations (I’m looking at you wife LOL) take me off the beach about 5.

Yea they are. When they brake or wear out I have some better circle hooks to swap in. They are holding up to everything so far. The stingray jacked one up and it broke.

Are you catching them on top or bottom?

I see the guys at hatteras with coolers full of puffers called blow roads.

They split them down the middle and cut out the two filets.

Everything except the bluefish and that leather jack was on the bottom. Pompano double dropper with shrimp and sand flea fish bites (didn’t matter the flavor IMO). Tipped with a small chunk of peeled frozen shrimp. The 2 sharp nose sharks were on a single drop I made out of 50lb floro and some cut up whiting. The bonehead (thought hammer) was on the pomp rigs. It’s a little too cool for the metal jigs for blues and Spanish I think. I tossed them a bunch with only one hookup. So today I let them soak.

I had two pomp rigs out one as far as I could toss and one just beyond the brakers. The closer one produced more fish. Usually you want to get right beyond the first sandbar but right now that first sandbar is so far out the first trough is pretty big and fish are holding up in there.

The puffers are supposed to be good but if you don’t clean them right you can be fricked and die. I’m good

I can tell you’re the guy that’s always catching fish.

You need to find a rip or a hole. That's where I've had all of my luck. If the surf is clear look for any holes, the whiting while stack in there and the bigger fish will come in to eat them. You cand read the rip based off of how the waves are breaking to the shore.

I always bring 4 rods down. I wade out to the first bar, throw 1 as far as I can. 2nd one I throw as far as I can from the knee deep surf. Third on the front of the first bar. Last in the trough.

Occasionally I'll bring my little 2 foot dock demon and throw it in the trough, fun when a whiting grabs that.

Once you locate them, focus all rods at that depth. The pomp's I posted on page 1, I caught all of them on one rod out of the four, in a single day. Caught the wives limits. It was the furthest out, it would be dead for an hour then I'd catch 4 in 10 minutes.

Yep exactly. The first sand bar is super far right now tho so the trough is pretty big and deep. I have done the best just past the braking waves right off the beach. I’m not walking and looking for a good spot this time, just out in front.

Another stingray and the first hardheaded so far this morning. Stingray broke one of those shitty gold hooks on the pomp rig when I was dragging it to unhook and it slithered away. I’m ok with that LOL.

Fillet and skin that hard tail
Cut all of the blood away
slice the flesh thin
Mix some wasabi and soy sauce
Dip fish pieces in the sauce and enjoy
I e been saltwater fishing for decades and never knew until a guy that I sell to at the sushi shop told me about it a few years ago.

I didn’t expect to pull one out the water much less two at once. Figured it was a little warm for them to be up close…but there they were.

I've caught them in August before, they just aren't as thick. They will swing in as a school hit bait and head back out.

That’s what happened I’m sure.

Got a cpl Spanish this morning. If you haven’t tried them before you should they are not bad. One of the kids with us caught one and wanted to clean it…so there wasn’t much meat from that one
