Cut a Trapped Gator Loose at St Marks NWR

Came across this large gator that was wrapped up in ratchet strap at St Marks NWR South of Tallahassee. The strap was tied to a railing on the little walking bridge above the canal. I pulled on the strap and got it untangled but the strap was looped around its neck with two ratchet strap hooks connected under it's throat. Had to be intentional right?. Trying to figure out how a trap like that would work.
My cousin is over gator management for the state/FWC and I tried to call him to ask him what I should do but he didn't answer. I waited a while for him to call me back, but I couldn't wait out there forever, it was already 9 pm, so I ended up cutting the strap with as little strap left as possible so it wouldn't be just stuck there. It didn't seem like it was choking. Seemed like the strap might eventually come off? Maybe it will live. Of course my cousin called me back 1 minutes after I cut it. He and his team are going to investigate it.

Looks like someone made a loop in the end of the tow strap and lassoed him, then tied it off.

Good on you. You did what you could.
Although, that could’ve been some baws pet he was leaving there while he fished…

That would be a pretty low IQ thing to do, and a great way to get attacked by a large gator.

I fish there at least twice a month. Lot's of Gators there. no problem cause I been fishing the Glades for years..I'm use to them.
But the Gators at St. Marks don't have any manners. They need a good cull there just to knock back the aggressive ones.
Lots of Nature, Bunny huggers go there and are just amazed at a Gator coming close.
Me , as a bit more of a Native know. These Gators need the fear of Man put back in their arse...
